Default Do Americans Reserve The Individual Right To Bear Arms?

The Second Amendment

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
Thomas Jefferson

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Thomas Jefferson

A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained in arms, is the best most natural defense of a free country.
James Madison

Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.
James Madison

Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples' liberty's teeth.
George Washington

The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good.
George Washington

Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state.
Thomas Jefferson

I don't have a problem not giving guns to insane people or known criminals. I think that's a fair restriction.

I think its fair to say that felons should lose some rights. However the constitution doesent define the second amendment that way. And that was the question was about. Not what you think we should do but what the constitution says that we can do!

Granted. But it is a very broad ammendment in the constitution, and I don't have a problem with laws passed by the congress that impose some restrictions on the ability to possess "arms."

Also, I think since arms is a very vague term it must be defined. Since the constitution doesn't really specify who is to define terms in the constitution, I guess I will just have to side with the Marshall court on that particular subject and rely on the judicial branch.

Everyone should have the right to bear arms, but only for self protection and defence.

Of coarse.

The lefts idea of the government reserving its own right to let itself own guns.. well that just doesn't make sense!

I answered "yes with restrictions". There is no such thing as an 'absolute' right. Thankfully, we have litmus tests that are used to judge the reasonableness of a restriction on our rights, called "scrutiny". Now if only those pesky lawmakers would apply it before legislating restrictions...

I said yes with some restrictions, and the people who picked no restrictions must be insane! I do believe gun ownership should not be restricted(within reason), but I don't think people should be allowed to carry guns onto an airplane!! I don't think a pre-schooler should have the right to bring a gun into class, for that matter I don't think guns are a good idea in schools at all(maybe college, but even that is a stretch)! I am also sure that there are other places I would not want people to be carrying guns, which I can't think of right now.
