Icon12 Obama's move toward the "center"

Barack Obama seems to be moving toward the center lately.

Shall we chalk this up to the "typical" political shmoozing after winning the nomination?

Maybe lack of experience?

Will he come back to the left in time for the convention?

Well...theres also the possibility that, being black, and having a Muslim middle name may make him think that he has to work extra hard to come to the center (as many Neanderthals in this forum [who will likely reply to this message] will attest).

But, Obama shouldnt work to please them-they won't vote for him anyway...and this country needs BIG change-and moving to the center is not going to do it.

This is how the political system works, it shouldn't be that surprising. People try and appeal to the voter, then they do what they have to do. I won't be surprised if it takes until Obama's second term/ a new president to be elected before the war in iraq is ended. AKA "typical political shmoozing" yes. haha.

He's going to end up sticking to the center, as that is the most politically advantageous spot to be in once elected- and where all the pressure will go.
In addition most of his past writings suggest a more moderate position than his pandering to the left.
The protectionist rhetoric was very obviously just pandering to the union vote, for instance.

Not that he really went all that far left in the first place. Right-wingers have simply set their bar that anything even a tiny bit past the center is "far-left". Hell, even centrist or center-right positions in some cases (that (*)(*)(*)(*) liberal McCain).

No. His pandering to the 'left-wing' of his Party was only temporary; it was a pragmatic tactic to help him secure the 'base' vote.
I started a thread about this, but everyone seems to be ignoring it...not that I care or anything...

The center is a better place to be elected from. The further right of left the more chance you have of chasing people in the other direction. I have watch many other politions drift to the center over the years. It doesn't eventually make them conservatives (spare us from another one) in the end.
