The party seems to have many worthwhile beliefs, but the party sounds too much like a religious institution for me to take them seriously.

It would also need a bunch of Constitutional Amendments to implement many of its policies.

Also, I find this insulting and I'm not even gay:

Homosexuals in the Military

The America First Party will not support any proposal that allows homosexuals into the military service of the United States of America, in any capacity.

The United States military service is an honorable vocation for honorable men and women.

I have no doubt that many gays have given their lives for this country and to consider them unhonorable by implication is terrible.

I could go on, but there is too much to say and I have to end somewhere....

Default Like it or not

America was founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs. Religion has ALWAYS played a part in politcs, it was only recently that people have tried to squash anything resembling Christian or moral beliefs in the realm of politics.

As for gays in the military, I agree with you on that issue. I don't have any real problem with gays in the military, so long as they aren't too out in the open about it. I think that we should respect people's choices, even in the military (as long as it doesn't affect their ability to perform).

And no reasonable person wants to scrub all reference to God from the public discourse. But throughout history, we have justified horrible acts and overt discrimination based on the relgious beliefs of the majority of the public.

For example, the current iteration of the "right to privacy" was developed in a Supreme Court case which struck Connecticut's law banning contraception. Now, what legitimate governmental purpose could that law serve? It is the same now with regard to other codifications of religious tenets that are still law.

Thomas Jefferson spoke of a wall between church and state, but it is clear that the Constitution doesn't mandate that and none of the founders acted like it did. But we should show respect to the first amendment by allowing people their freedoms of belief and by forcing the government to STOP codifying the tenets of religion. Since this new party doesn't want that, I would never support it.

So they dont think it should be able to be amended?

I'm going to have to vote no. The Republicans do not represent my ideology exactly, but they are much closer to it than this platform is.

(Edit - Dont get me wrong...there's a lot I like about the platform...but there is more i like about the Republican platform)

you have failed to mention all of the great things that religion has brought about, such as Emancipation of Slaves and the Civil Rights movement...

Jefferson talked about the separation of church and state... NOT religious beliefs and state, there is a huge difference. It's funny, for a man that most liberals consider to be an atheist, he talked an aweful lot about God.

Oh, I am pretty confident in saying that there were religious people on both sides of those issues. In fact, you will find that people on the wrong side of slavery and racial discrimination used religion to justify their distorted views.
