This article raises some interesting points I hadnt heard before, regarding emerging technologies and how they will affect the human race as a whole. Some of these technologies are actually pretty radical.

We've survived this long.

The Earth is billions of years old. We've been here for a mere blip. And modern civilization has only been here a mere millisecond. The Dinosaurs lived for hundreds of millions of years. We won't make it even a fraction of that long. We will kill ourselves off WAY before that. I would bet not even 500 years. Maybe way less.

The dinosaurs also did not have the OPTION of destroying themselves. We do. That is why the two situations are not analogous.

We are too violent, too selfish and too short sighted to have it be otherwise. We will kill ourselves off precisely because we can.

Whether or not the human species continues to exist depends almost entirely on how soon we are able to colonize other bodies in our solar system.

I believe you hit the nail on the head, or human in this case. I find humans to be inherently evil and most of the time I am deeply ashamed to be in that species class. I have yet to find any other animal on this planet that kills indiscriminately out of malice.

While I do see where you are coming from.. I think we will be annhilated by and extraterrestrial race. Mainly for the same reasons that you listed, we are too warlike and too selfish and too emotionally charged.

Consider that there are galaxies billions of years older than ours... Consider that by the most conservatives estimates, most alien species that could possibly be in existance would be (at a minimum) 10,000 years ahead of us.... Consider our meteoric rise in technological capabilities since about mid-WWII.... Consider how most of that technology is either created or used...

Piece all those considerations together and it is easy to see a scenario where we achieved interstellar travel abilities well before we are culturally ready for such a power. It is also easy to assume one or some of those races in question will not look highly on a violent and petty race that spreads virulently.

My own personal "doomsday" scenerio is that we achieve the stars and get exterminated by an alien race that fears us...

But in the end it would be our fault. Knowing what I know about humans and how utterly stupid, selfish and evil we tend to be, if I were an alien race I would certainly kill all the humans before they spread like a virus throughout the solar system. Nothing would be worse than humans leaving Earth.
