Andre Thomas, 25, was arrested for killing his estranged wife, her 13-month-old daughter, and their 5-year-old son, then ripping out their hearts in March 2004.
The picture shown above was taken in 2006 at the Grayson County Jail in Sherman while awaiting trial, after he gouged out his right eye. After gouging out his second eye on December 9, Thomas was treated at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. Then he was transferred to the Jester Unit, a prison psychiatric facility near Richmond southwest of Houston, where he currently remains.
Thomas was judged competent to stand trial. He was convicted and sentenced for the infant's death. He is still awaiting an execution date.
Texas death row inmate gouges out last good eye and eats it
A Texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye and told authorities he ate it.
A death-row officer at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice found Thomas in his cell with blood on his face and took him to the infirmary.
"Thomas said he pulled out his eye and subsequently ingested it," agency spokesman Jason Clark said yesterday.
