Default FARC Leader Killed/Chavez threatens War

Chavez in Farc raid 'war' warning

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has warned Colombia a strike against Farc rebels inside Venezuela like that in Ecuador on Saturday could start a war.
He was speaking after Colombian air and ground forces killed a senior member of the leftist rebels operating just inside Ecuadorean territory.

Farc spokesman Raul Reyes died along with at least 16 other rebels and one Colombian soldier, Bogota said.

Ecuador has protested to Colombia over the incursion.

'Very serious'

Venezuela's leftist leader has been mediating with Farc to secure the release of hostages the rebels hold.

The rebels recently freed four of about 40 political captives into the care of Mr Chavez.

Speaking at a televised meeting of his cabinet in Caracas on Saturday, Mr Chavez warned Colombia about attempting cross-border operations.

Farc has been involved in conflict in Colombia for four decades

"Don't think about doing that over here because it would be very serious, it would be cause for war," he said.

The death of Reyes was described as the "biggest blow so far" to Farc by Colombian Defence Minister Juan Manuel Santos.

Reyes was killed in an air raid followed by a ground operation, the minister said.

The rebels had been in a camp 1.8km (1 mile) on the Ecuadorian side of the border across from the province of Putumayo when the attack was called in, Mr Santos said.

During the Munich Crisis prior to the Munich Agreement Neville Chamberlain had 2 meetings with Adolf Hitler..in one of these

Chamberlain remarked-

(WttE)"This could mean war"

To which Hitler applied-

(WttE)"Then let it come soon.. while I'm still young"

Different circtumstances obviously but Colombia's president should reply to Hugo Chavez with the same thing Hitler said to Chamberlain.

How is Venezuela asserting it's sovereignty in Ecuador? Venezuela has no sovereignty in Ecuador. If Venezuela enter Ecuador, I expect the UN to invade Venezuela because of territorial infringment.

If Venezuela start involving themselves in Ecuador or Colombia because of FARC then they are joining a Terrorist organisation that is declared one by the US an EU. IF they do that, then they are supporting the Cocaine trade and should be invaded.

It would be the same if Iran started involving it's military in Lebanon, backing Hezbollah directly.

I've noticed DuH2 that you have started recently using BBC sources. Any reason why? Just curious because that's the first source I use, seems to be pretty balanced compared to others.....

there was no mention of chavez crossing ecuador's border. the reference was to colombia crossing ecuador's border to take out the FARC leader.
chavez has warned colombia not to think it can similarly intrude on venezuela's soverignity in the same manner.
chavez is citing colombia as the israel of south america ... not an inappropriate description from what i can see

Iraq should have been invaded under the UN. It wasn't because France vetoed it. France vetoed it because of it's huge oil business and sanctions infringements with Iraq.

Iraq should have been invaded in 1991.

Justbubba,

Why would Chavez take out the FARC leader? Colombia went into Ecuador to kill FARC
rebels and Chavez is against this, in fact he wants to back Ecuador.

Chavez is trying to free Venezuelan prisoners in FARC's hands, he does not want to kill them.

Nah I've always used the BBC..they are biased in some regards notably often pandering to the hate USA first crowd..but they cover news from everywhere..unlike much of the US media.

no one said chavez wanted to take out the FARC leader. colombia crossed into ecuadorian territory to do so (presumably on behalf of its USA mentor)
chavez is trying to get the world to view FARC as insurgents rather than terrorists, so there would be no reason for him to murder FARC officials
