British Parliament Speaker Steps Down Amid Expenses Scandal
May 19, 2009 - The Speaker of the House of Commons Michael Martin has resigned from office following a scandal involving ministers of parliament and expenses.
Quote:
In a very brief statement, Martin became only the second person since 1695 to give up the post saying, "In order that unity can be maintained, I have decided that I will relinquish the office of Speaker on Sunday, June 21."
Despite the scandal, Martin reportedly only resigned after pressure from Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Brown likely made it clear that hanging on until the next election was no longer a viable option, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The Speaker holds many roles in Parliament. The Speaker chairs debates in the Commons chamber, during debates they keep order and call MPs to speak. The Speaker is the chief officer and highest authority of the House of Commons and must remain politically impartial at all times, according to the British government. The Speaker also represents the Commons to the monarch, the Lords and other authorities and chairs the House of Commons Commission.
