When my "old" friend Gordon Fischer picked Obama to support a few months back, I thought he was trying to relive his youth by picking a candidate mostly supported by young people. He and I are both around 40, and there wasn't many people over 40 supporting Obama. Most of my young friends and colleagues were supporting Obama, and most are members of Facebook and other social networking sites.
But I didn't fully make the connection until this morning. Social networking sites like Facebook really helped to turn the tide for Obama. Gordon used Facebook to communicate with
his blog's readers, and by reading about the turnout on college campuses. He also correctly predicted a record turnout for the Iowa Caucuses.
You have to be a member of
Facebook to check out the Obama groups, but one even sprang up just in the last week called, "come and caucus for Obama." Hillary Clinton, who's main supporters are mostly older people who don't use social networking, didn't get the message quite as strongly.
This is an irreversible trend! Social networking is an indispensible campaign tool and cannot be ignored!
