When the people speak they overwhelmingly support marriage and family. On a cold morning (Dec. 30, 2007) in Madrid anywhere from hundreds of thousands to two million people came out to demonstrate their support for marriage and family and oppose the anti-family social laws instituted by the socialist government of José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero without a vote of the people.
Minimal attention was given by the Spanish media to this massive demonstration organized by some 40 bishops in which Pope Benedict XVI himself addressed the masses in real time via videoconference on a huge screen. In a clear reference to the government’s institution of same-sex “marriage,” and easy divorce legislation, the Pontiff, speaking in Spanish, said that it was “worth the effort to work for the family and marriage” which he defined as “the indissoluble union of a man and a woman.”
Archbishop of Madrid Antonio Mar*a Rouco Varela denounced the government stating that Spain through its “judicial ordinances has marched backwards with respect to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations: [. . .] that the family is the nucleus and foundation of society and has a right to be protected by society and the State.”
