As can be expected, Hammerpants was just the tip of the iceberg. It was actively discussed over at Pam's House Blend:
Naturally, at the Opine Echo Chamber, it took all of 10 minutes for some[one] to tell us that queer folks are actually the terrorists.
That is from Dan L in
his diary post at Pam's House Blend. Now I have to admit Mr Howard's comment was not easily parsed, but it did not mention "queers" or "terrorists". Nor can someone who has caused such heated debate and disagreement on Opine be considered an "echo chamber". And Dan isn't ignorant of the disagreement either, he links to a guest post of Mr Howards in the comment section. In comparison, read his entry to see if anyone dissented at all with that or any other obviously erroneous statement.
Without the fear of scrutiny from his peers, it doesn't take long for his misinformation campaign to trip itself up again:
We're well aware of the take that some fundamentalist Muslims have on sexuality and gender and have dually noted that it only differs in degrees from the "values" that the Opiners expound.
The link he provides as "the values that Opiners expound" is oddly enough to Falwell.com, and not Opine Editorials. In his effort to misinform, he does the dishonest bait and switch routine.
Why they go to such great lengths to pretend that Opine is out to be anti-homosexual is beyond me. All of us oppose any law that prohibits homosexuality, and all but one of us support extending benefits and protections to homosexual couples. Why such animosity and lies about is? It has some obvious advantages,
- It gives them a convenient emotion to grasp since the semantics of rational argumentation seem beyond their ability to grasp. As cymatic states in reply that link of deliberate misinformation,
Every time I check on that horrid site (opine, not yours!) I am tempted to dive in to the fray. Now I can just look at your Fanual and remind myself that there's just no reason to try to deal with their nutty logic. Plus I'll have a little laugh, which is very healthy, unlike the irritation I get from reading the aggravating insanity of those opiners..."
- Reality doesn't muster the troops, they need a more cartoonish enemy. But those are just guesses, the facts remain they are deeply misinformed about what Opine is, and perpetuate those untruths without remorse. These are not rational people. As Karen from Kalifornia in the comment section says,
Why are we taking Opine online seriously...their subtitle is:"Defending marriage on the firm ground of reason and respect for human dignity." Might as well be Freeperland.
Isn't 'defending marriage' code for homosexual bigotry?
He goes on:
Yet somehow, the desire to categorize "the enemy" into some homogeneous group places the moderate and reasonable American left (and, let's be honest - conservatives like myself who couldn't care any less about Christian values) as best friends with the ultra-right of the Islamic world.
Actually there is no indication that Fitz intended any such homogeneous group. And an article that explains the connection would probably look more like
this. And even that isn't a conflated lumping. Locke in the comment section plays the role of the Muslim apologist when someone brings up her sons service in the Military:
Your son is fighting the same enemies, then. Mr French should quit and stop fighting against Muslims, he's an idiot. Your son is just stupid.
[...] not stupid, sorry[.] just misinformed
[...] Where normally there would have been an anti-war left, they were neutralized and even, like Andrew Sullivan, turned into hawks by their pro-gay anti-fundie uber alles mindset. The army should go over there and fight the fundies and liberate gays and lesbians and bring freedom and avenge the dynamited Buddha statues that everyone saw on the frontpage of the New York Times.
The emphasis and compilation of his comments from that thread are my own.
At this point I should show that I appreciate that Hammerpants did join the fray, and I hope came to a sense of understanding. It is rare to see one people try to understand at all.
I don't really comment here often, and I am not doing so now to try to instigate a heated debate by any means but am here more so to mention something as an FYI... (that is, if Opine does sincerely intend to treat all humans with decency and respect) and I do believe, or want to believe, that many who post here do have good intentions...
but to call proponents of same sex marriage "America's enemies" is very insulting and disrespectful.
Her message of how disdainful it is to simply label one's opposition as America's enemies is something to consider. Labels like that should not be thrown haphazardly. So they notice how even when Dan and Hammerpants note their rules for proper conversation, how rude it is at all to call people the enemies of America and conflate them with terrorists as a rhetorical device, that Dan does just that in a pictorial essay.
Fitz gives an explanation of just how neutering marriage -- not homosexuality in and of itself -- threatens a just society in the comment section (I took some editorial license with the paragraph numbering and removed more conversational and superflous sentences):
My point was not to call you un-American because you exercise free speech.
My point: and this explanation, is to say; that advocating for same-sex "marriage" (as well as it implementation) puts American society at risk.
In that sense I stand by my characterization of advocates of same-sex "marriage" to be "enemies of America" inasmuch as ss"m" threatens the social fabric of...well....America.
[...] Just because you have the “right” to do something (and you do) does not make the exercise of the right inherently “American” or for the good of society.
Within the context of Marriage quo “marriage” with 40% of children being born to out-of-wedlock homes and 50% divorce rates and 70% illegitimacy rates among African-Americans specifically – I do not cringe at calling proponents of same-sex marriage “Americas Enemies.
No doubt they do not see themselves this way. If they did they would not be advocating what they are advocating.
In this regard its important to note that across civilizations and well within the American understanding of marriage in both law and culture stands an ever present connection.
That connection is best expressed in the constant referral through the centuries of marriage as a foundational social institution.
Those who threaten the foundation of something threaten the existence of the thing itself. So it is with marriage.
[...]
Large amounts of people who are not GLBT support neutering marriage, likewise: large segments of the GLBT population don’t regard changing the definition of marriage to be a civil rights issue & view its sponsored change as dangerous and wrongheaded.
By the way, in contrast of a message of tolerance in the face of social harm, the link to the quote that
Jose provided from Ryan Charisma (who commented in that post) is
here. This is his idea of a salute to the
Reverend Martin Luther King Jr,
I would like to say, that I hold the highest regard for the work MLK put into the civil rights fight for equality. He was a good man, an honest man and a someone who truly believed in the words that came out of his mouth. Unlike all our politicians who just pander and babel the buzzwords that they think we want to hear. Well, kids Momma is still listening and you know what? No one is saying what I want to hear.
[...] And by stupid people I mean Christian fundamentalists. I have a dream too, that our Government honestly (and I know that's a big order already) keeps the original notion of 'separation of church & state'.
I have a dream too, that I'm finally considered equal to everyone else in America. I dream that all the haters in America choke to death on their vile words of "special rights", "abomination before God", "gays, pedophiles & alcoholics" & so on. Die you [...], and not a quick and easy death either. Your suffering should reflect the suffering you've imposed on others. I have a dream you die, I dream your (*)(*)(*)(*) 'rapture' comes and takes you from us. Oh what a blessing from God that would be. I'll be left behind with all the "bad" people, for I have no use for you hypocrites and liars who think you're going straight to heaven.
