Default Hillary ‘Loaned’ Campaign $5M Last Month

From USA Today:

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., addresses the media at her national headquarters Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, in Arlington, Va.

Clinton loaned her campaign $5M last month

“Late last month Sen. Clinton loaned her campaign $5 million,” Howard Wolfson, a spokesman for the former first lady’s presidential campaign just told USA TODAY’s Fredreka Schouten and other reporters in an e-mail. “The loan illustrates Sen. Clinton’s commitment to this effort and to ensuring that our campaign has the resources it needs to compete and win across this nation. We have had one of our best fundraising efforts ever on the webs today and our Super Tuesday victories will only help in bringing more support for her candidacy.”
Fredreka had asked Wolfson to respond to something said earlier today during a conference call that the campaign set up between strategist Mark Penn and reporters. Penn was asked if Clinton was going to use any of her own wealth (as Republican Mitt Romney has) to fund her presidential effort. He said he didn’t know.
The Clinton campaign raised about $108 million last year and says it took in another $13.5 million last month. Today, it appealed to supporters to help it raise $3 million more in three days.
It is looking for money in part because the race has not shaped up the way either the campaign or most pundits thought it would. Instead of wrapping up the nomination by yesterday, as the Clinton team had previously predicted it would, the battle with Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination now looks like it might continue for several weeks or longer.
Clinton is holding a news conference in Arlington, Va., and was just asked whether she will be loaning her campaign more money. She demurred: “I’m just going to leave it. … My campaign has put out a statement (and) you can see what I’ve done.”She also said, about the loan, that “I believed the campaign would have a great month fundraising in January. We intended to be competitive and we were. … And I think the result last night proved the wisdom of my investment.”
I guess we now know where all those anonymous donations to the Clinton Library and the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation went.
But where is the FEC?Shouldn’t we at the very least be able to find out who is buying the Presidency for Hillary — and why?
