Take a moment to look around you. Notice anything different?
As far as I can tell, sitting here in Washington D.C., there have been no terrorist attacks on American soil today. The world has not ended. I don't feel less safe. I'm not stockpiling water and duct-taping my windows shut.
The terrorism threat level is pegged at a calm yellow, where it has been for months.
And yet, something has changed. The Protect America Act, the law that gave Bush greatly expanded spying powers,
the law that would allegedly bring calamity if it expired, is no more. It expired at midnight last night. I doubt most Americans even noticed.
So, take a moment to look around. Do you feel less safe? If not, perhaps you can dismiss most of what comes out of Bush's mouth as simple fear mongering, and ignore him until January 20th, 2009.
