Bob Schaffer, the GOP candidate for Colorado's open 2008 Senate race,
announced that Dick Wadhams will be his campaign adviser. It'll be double duty for Wadhams, who is already Colorado GOP chairman.
Back in early 2007, when Wadhams became the state's GOP chair, the blog Outside the Beltway referred to Dick as the man "
who oversaw the transformation of George Allen from a 2008 presidential contender to a one-term senator."
You'll remember George Allen for the "macaca" incident, in which he told a dark skinned man "welcome to America, and the real world of Virginia." Perhaps you don't remember his opposition to the celebration of MLK's birthday, or the noose and confederate flag he kept in his possession.
Together with Allen, Wadhams ran "a campaign like a lot of the Karl Rove campaigns. They focus on personal invective," said his opponent Jim Webb. A spokesperson for Mark Udall, Colorado's Democratic candidate for Senate, said "with Mr. Wadhams on board, we can expect Bob Schaeffer's campaign to be one of constant negative attacks, not ideas."
In his typical classy style, Wadhams burst onto the scene with this choice quote:
"I can do anything I want," he said. "This is a marquee race and a lot is riding on it. There should always have been the presumption that I would get involved."
