Default Will 2008 Candidates Address Iraq & Afghanistan War Crimes

Vets Break Silence on Iraq War Crimes, March 2008

IVAW Updates

Patriot Missiles: London Times Magazine Cover Story on Winter Soldier
The Sunday Times Magazine, March 1, 2008 The veterans are not against the military and seek not to indict it – instead they seek to shine a light on the bigger picture: that the Abu Ghraib prison regime and the Haditha massacre of innocent Iraqis are not isolated incidents perpetrated by “bad seeds” as the military suggests, but evidence of an endemic problem. They will say they were tasked to do terrible things and point the finger up the chain of command, which ignores, diminishes or covers up routine abuse and atrocities.
“How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?”
U.S. veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are planning to descend on Washington from Mar. 13-16 to testify about war crimes they committed or personally witnessed in those countries.
“The war in Iraq is not covered to its potential because of how dangerous it is for reporters to cover it,” said Liam Madden, a former Marine and member of the group Iraq Veterans Against the War. “That’s left a lot of misconceptions in the minds of the American public about what the true nature of military occupation looks like.”
“The problem that we face in Iraq is that policymakers in leadership have set a precedent of lawlessness where we don’t abide by the rule of law, we don’t respect international treaties, so when that atmosphere exists it lends itself to criminal activity,” argues former U.S. Army Sergeant Logan Laituri, who served a tour in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 before being discharged as a conscientious objector.
Laituri told IPS that precedent of lawlessness makes itself felt in the rules of engagement handed down by commanders to soldiers on the front lines. When he was stationed in Samarra, for example, he said one of his fellow soldiers shot an unarmed man while he walked down the street.
They’ll trek along Kelly Drive, past the Art Museum and Boathouse Row, across the Strawberry Mansion Bridge and continue out west until they meet about 90 other veterans at Valley Forge on Sunday afternoon.
Along the way, they hope to dispel a few myths about the Iraq war and give regular people an idea of the grim reality that their fellow soldiers still face overseas.
“We wanted to do something in solidarity that could send a message to the American people,” said Steve Mortillo, the president of the Philadelphia chapter of IVAW, who served in Iraq with the U.S. Calvary 1st Squadron Infantry Division.
“It’s been five years since the war started, and a lot of us have feelings that Americans only should die in combat if it’s a cause that’s going to save more American lives than it’s going to cost.”
Today’s march also will promote IVAW’s Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan, a three-day gathering for veterans of both wars that will take place next month in Washington, D.C.
This is a war the American Taxpayer has poured Billions of their Tax Dollars into. Sending soldiers into a bogus war to create a terrorist Disneyland. Sending America’s protectors into a bottomless pit and destroying thousands of American lives in the process. The cost of oil is dear because it is mixed with blood. To squeeze the last drop of oil from the sandy earth on another continent in order to maintain and economic edge over our neighbors is criminal. The US is forcing America’s soldiers to ignore the Geneva Convention. The US forces America’s soldiers to kill indiscriminately. Then the US expects them to return home and behave as civilized citizens, with no remorse or doubt or damage. Returning veterans are expected to erase the memories of blood, gore, fear and anxiety. Loud sounds are not explosions. Nightmares are hidden, because it is shameful to admit an emotional defect … our culture is still suspicious of emotional casualties. I am personally suspicious of a returning veteran who claims they were not emotionally effected. What kind of human would say that? How will they treat their own family after the chaos they returned from?
