The US State Department rejects wannabe immigrants who have gambled their lives to help Americans. The stories are endless and tragic. Americans promise the world to Iraqis and Afghanis, winning their allegiance and support. Often recruiting them for dangerous translator positions, sometimes making outrageous promises they know can’t be kept. Some collaborators dies trying to help Americans. If they don’t die in service, they will become refugees or be executed by militant gangs.(*) We deny Green Cards to too many of these heroes.
According to Petraeus’s command, 648 of the 5,300 Iraqi translators now working for U.S. forces in Iraq had special-visa applications pending as of December. Petraeus has assigned legal officers to facilitate their petitions, helping gather the documents, signatures and military affidavits required, and said he has signed many letters urging individual approvals. The program’s Special Immigrant Visa allows only entry into the United States, however, and immigrants are advised to petition for permanent residence upon arrival.
That appears to be a pretty small percentage of helpers to be allowed into the USA.
“Give me your tired, your poor
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore
Send these the homeless tempest-tost to me
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
These people are not your “tired or poor” these are America’s supporters, collaborators and local contractors. These people risked their families to help us. Whatever organization they belonged to in the past should not prevent their consideration for immigration. The US is using Green Card envy as the carrot on a very long stick. That is shameful. ©2008
