Ahead of her time.
On June 7, 1977, Anita Bryant's led a campaign to repeal of the pro-homosexual "discrimination" ordinance by a margin of 69 to 31 percent. The Florida statute's forbidding adoptions by gay persons, remains law; in 2004, a federal appellate court upheld Florida’s adoption law against a constitutional challenge.
"As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children"
"What these people really want, hidden behind obscure legal phrases, is the legal right to propose to our children that theirs is an acceptable alternate way of life. [...] I will lead such a crusade to stop it as this country has not seen before."
In the late 70’s prescient observers like Ms. Bryant knew that homosexuals did not simply want to be “left alone” as “two consenting adults” “behind closed doors”. Indeed they were fixated on forcing a homosexual ideology on the nation and its youth.
As it is today with fights over school curriculum, education policy, gay marriage, & adoption the battle rages on. As it was then the opposition cannot engage in fruitful dialogue. Rather the strategy is to call names and engage in the vilest tactics to try and silence your opposition & make them look foolish in the public square.
