McCain was against the politics of fear before he was for it
With Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton continuing to battle for the Democratic nomination, John McCain has no one to argue with but himself. Is it political opportunism, senility or just the lack of firm convictions? You be the judge.
1995: There is nothing more despicable than scaring innocent people for political gain.
2008: Republican presidential candidate John McCain said on Friday he fears that al Qaeda or another extremist group might attempt spectacular attacks in Iraq to try to tilt the U.S. election against him.
1999Moreover, when force must be used, have clear rules of engagement, define an achievable mission, know how to recognize when it is accomplished, and bring them home as soon as possible.
2008: The United States military could stay in Iraq for "maybe a hundred years" and that "would be fine with me," John McCain told two hundred or so people at a town hall meeting in Derry, New Hampshire, on Thursday evening.
1993: While I realize that it is a sense of the Senate resolution, I believe we all acknowledge that it is in effect, a date certain for a vote on the commitment of U.S. forces to Somalia.
I believe that such a date certain is necessary for many reasons.
2008: Gov. Romney wanted to set a date for withdrawal [from Iraq] similar to what the Democrats are seeking, which would have led to a victory by al Qaeda in my view.
1994: The Federal government spends almost $2 billion a year for official air travel, and an even greater amount in hotel and car rental expenses. This is a shockingly enormous expenditure of taxpayer dollars. Congress has an obligation to ensure that such travel is for necessary purposes and that it is conducted as cost-efficiently as possible.
2008: The trip by McCain, who has linked his political future to U.S. military success in the nearly five-year-old war, coincided with the 20th anniversary of a horrific chemical weapons attack in northern Iraq… McCain's trip to Iraq is his eighth.
2004: Only the most deluded of us could doubt the necessity of this war.
2008: I detest war. It might not be the worst thing to befall human beings, but it is wretched beyond all description.
The DNC has much more on this.
