i was talking to another jewish dude this morning and im confused... he says "you're just born a jew" so i say so if im born a christian and i dont go to church or believe in bible am i a christian? of course im not, but this guy thinks i still am... anyway he's probably a kid.... i asked this question here before, but i forget the answers they gave me, so please be kind enough and explain to me what makes you a jew if you are one?
most likely you will say "my family is jewish, that's why i'm a jew" well, my grandparents from my father were catholic. but i just believed in being good and didnt pay attention to other stuff, so i dont consider myself catholic,.... try again....... do you realy need to categorize yourself as a jew?is there realy a need for it? please explain..... |

The religious way: the only way to become Jewish is if you a born to a Jewish mother. Converts are normally not accepted. And it isn't that hard to find an ex-Soviet Rabbi to write a certificate to prove your Jewish heritage. (Some million, more or less, emphasis on the word less, ex-Soviet Jews in Israel) So if your family is Jewish, you are Jewish.
Catholicism operates on a different basis. Converts are accepted and encouraged, and I think in Catholicism it is passed down by the father. But, being Jewish has been extended to a quasi-race. The criteria of which is rather arbritary, with the division between Sephardic and Ashkenaic Jews. The whole thing is still up for debate in Israel. Do you need to categorize yourself as a Jew? No, save that being Jewish gives you automatic Israeli citizenship, a pretty big incentive. |

good link stekim once again http://www.convert.org/differ.htm
i used to have this notion that christianity/jesus being considered a son of god was a good thing, because we all are children of god and not as some ancient religion claims just some thing out there.... however i now read that judaism does indeed consider all people as children of god. equal etc... so then i am not even sure what jesus was trying to achieve.....just trying to be different i guess? of course this has nothing to do with politics we talk about or zionism or any war on terror stuff...... |
