I watch BBC because they report on important situations in africa, asia, and latin america. CNN and FoxNews mostly report on bs crap in the us that I dont care about. CNN/FoxNews every week are simply an endless rerun of the same 5 or so important american stories with tons of little crappy unimportant things. I can only hear so much about Alito before I want to listen how more important stuff is going on outside of the us.

Its customers are the American people. The American people, by and large, are superficial, shallow, undereducated and largely ignorant of anything that goes on outside their living room. Hence the "news" stories you tend to see on TV. They are merely giving people what they want to see. If your news show is hard hitting and has stories that actually matter and my news show is all 10 second sound bites, Terri Schaivo, Michael Jackson, Brad Pitt, the house fire down the street, 15 minutes of weather and car chases I will clean your clock in the ratings. Every time.
The good news, however, is that we have more news outlets than at any time in history. If you WANT to know what's going on (which makes you a huge minority in this country) the information is out there. But trust me, Entertainment Tonight and news shows dedicated to what women wear are not going away.

Sensationalism in the media is the symptom of a serious disease in our society. Too often, we prefer the shallow to the deep. We prefer a surface gloss to something that actually makes us think. Since the media is ultimately run by profit, as stekim pointed out, its content reflects demand. This means that until we make information a higher priority than entertainment, meaning a higher priority than appearance and thought a higher priority than an emotional rush, we will continue having poor, uninformative news and no one but ourselves to blame. It is much like junk food. It shortens lives and makes us miserable in the long term, but until demand for it goes away, there will always be a plentiful supply of it at the local grocery store.
