Some claim that abortion will end only if society becomes chaste. I disagree. If the main problem is unwanted children, make them wanted through a government adoption program. This is my plan. If any woman, for any reason, wished not to raise a child, she could give the child to the government- no questions asked. The government would then put the child up for adoption. If no one wanted the child, the government would raise the child by hiring de facto guardians (with full background checks) for them. This is infinitely preferable to killing these children.
As for abortion itself, I don't think that women should be charged with any crime for having abortions. I think, rather, that those who perform abortions or sell or manufacture abortifacients should be charged with first-degree murder.

Maybe some women wouldn't want to put their child up for adoption and know it is out there somewhere and not know how it is doing.

So someone who hires a hitman shouldn't be charged either, only the hitman?

I'm not sure which side of the fence you're on, offspring13, but in answer to your second question, if the person hiring the assassin were facing agony equivalent to childbirth and an enormous burden equivalent to raising a child, I would pardon them. That is not the case with those who hire assassins, however.
