In my concept of Utopia…. Governments would actually be by the people and for the people. Corporations would have a social conscience. Greed would truly be a punishable offence. John Q. Public would have the guts to actually BUYCOTT the Wal-Marts and all the corporate destroyers of small town and community based economies. Health care would be available to everyone, and Pharmaceutical Giants would be forced to provide affordable drugs to the sick. Voters would realize that if a politician’s and/or lawyer’s lips are moving he/she is lying and should never be placed in any position of authority. President Bartlett aka Martin Sheen or Colon Powell would be president. The UN would be more than and anachronism. War would be a board game and fire arms would be beaten into nails with which to build homes for the homeless. Big business would not rule the world. Transportation vehicles would run on Ethenol. Hell would actually be a place to which ALL religionists and other tyrants would be banished. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob would be added to the Parthenon to share eternity with the others on myths on Mount Olympus. All religious tomes would be removed from the sacred category and placed in the fiction section. Humans everywhere would realize that under the skin we are all the same, that life is short and that we have but one life to live...there is no afterlife or rewards waiting in a fictional place with an old white man with a long beard passing goodies and creating non aerodynamic humanoids with enormous wings. There would be no need for an arms race because everyone took care of and shared with at least one person or family to whom they were not related. NATIONALISM wherever it shows its ugly head would be a federal offence. And George W would be sharecropper in Crawford. There is more but my synapses hurt……

Exactly why would anyone want to be born and raised in a Utopian world? No chance to advance or retreat, no struggle, no pain, no happiness, just plan and utter boredom ultimately? If you where born with everything, could have anything, could do anything, what would really be the point? Would life even be worth living? What of struggle, of standing for your beliefs and ideals, and changing, conserving, adapting, pushing yourself in order to reach a goal? Why would anyone want everything on a silver platter, that makes absolutely no sense to me. Then again every leftist Utopian ideal sounds like hell to me anyways so Utopian ideals in general sound like a extremely boring and useless ideals. I could think of a no better hell, then a place where you had to do nothing, where you earned nothing, where there was no struggle, no risk taking, no excitement.

Yes, Btd, oil has turned into something like Midas's gold: a curse for many of those who live in oil rich countries and maddening for those who want it desperately.
Struggle, at some level is a useful part of the human condition but I wish that the human economic systems contained an appreciation for balance, harmony and sustainability. Constant growth is a cancerous system yet that is exactly what the West aspires to. I am afraid that one day "nature" will be something only found in zoos |

In my ideal utopian society, one would be free to do as they pleased so long as it didn't interfere with any other individuals liberties. Pretty simple.
