Well, if employers were banned from discriminating based on family status (perhaps they already are), they would be arrested if they refused to hire those parents. My second idea is that I would provide the very best rehabilitation- but only once. If a person didn't stop their substance abuse the first time, they would receive no further assistance. In fact, if both of those ideas were somehow successfully implemented (easier written than done), I think that welfare as we know it could be eliminated without hurting those in need- unless I'm missing critical facts.

1. Too much regulation will hurt the economic climate for businesses. There has to be some other way.
2. Drug addicts typically need multiple chances. It's a rough road that requires a few lessons. But I think we should only focus on those that are serious, not those that go just to stay out of jail. And we should make them pay to show seriousness, even if just a little fee... perhaps more each time.

My idea is that employers would ultimately, even from a selfish perspective, find hiring poor single parents in their interests because of the tax money they would save from the elimination of welfare. Moreover, aren't most people able to end substance abuse the first time they try if they go to a well-run rehabilitation center (like the ones celebrities go to)?

Hey......I surf the net all day long too and sure it is exhausting but I'm not getting paid by the taxpayers to do it under the pretex of helping the poor. Big difference.

I'm a veteran from the mean streets of Detroit. I was mugged and shot numerous times. Both my legs are gone. Both arms completley blown away. I can only post here tapping my keyboard with a pencil hanging out of my mouth. My only protection was my dog who was stolen last week by some illegal Somolian aliens who ate the poor mutt.

Anytime I want to go somewhere I have to roll around like a ball, flapping my nubs like a wounded platypus on crack. Please don't feel sorry for me as I am a survivor and will manage somehow.
