France.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060520...societyoffbeat Italy came in as the country with the best cuisine (no shock, just there two months ago, and it has gotten even better) Germany came in as second rudest country (slight shock, cause Germans were always very kind to me) Spain was considered the country most wanted to live in, but they were considered almost as rude as France. United States has the worst food (as in bread and beer, for starters) The UK has the undistinguished reputation as being so bland that they were not rated. |

The results are most probably simply reflective of British cultural prejudices. The British have a historical animosity towards the German's and French, though nowadays it is mostly light hearted, it has been quite vicious.
As for my own personal experience, the French, or at least those in the South Western area in which the French side of my family live, are mostly quite friendly. I have been to small villages that I have never been to before, and been greeted with a 'bonjour' and a smile from everyone I've gone past. I guess it depends where you go. And how you act towards the locals.

I think they're wrong on food, the US has quite a number of great restaurants. It certainly is better than most European countries with the exception of Italy and France (although I don't like French food and don't see why so many enjoy it). Spain has some nice restaurants, I'd put the US on par with them.
But where the US stands out is variety, you can find great Italian food, great Chinese, great Moroccon, etc. Nowhere else (or very few places) will you find that variety. It is changing where other big cities around the globe have nice varities, but very few. Outside of French food, these is little else that is good in France. Chinese is ok, Italian is close to horrible. Spain has decent variety, and while Britain's food is bad, they have good Chinese and Indian cuisine there. Unless maybe they are judging by the type of food native to those countries instead of the types of restaurants they have? In which case the US is judged based upon hot dogs and hamburgers, which would explain a low rating.

Americans may eat a lot of crappy prepared and fast food, which most Europeans don't, but there is tons of good food here. As Reb said, far better than most places when it comes right down to it. For example, Atlanta is the food capital of the south and we have more good restaurants than nearly any city in America. In every ethnic flavor. All over the place. But I agree Italy is incredible and deserves it's lofty food ranking. You can't get a bad meal there. Anywhere.
