Default Harvard's President tried to smear a conservative professor

http://www.boston.com/news/local/art...holars_return/

Buried in the article is this little blurb
Quote:
Summers began the meeting by using an obscenity to ask West to help him cause problems for an outspoken conservative professor, Harvey Mansfield, West said.
I know we had a discussion on bias in universities and among professors, I couldn't find the thread otherwise I'd put this comment in there. If any other mods happen to find it please feel free to merge the topics.

In any event, how come this didn't get any coverage? The President of one of the largest and most respected universities in the world looking for information and help in smearing "an outspoken conservative professor?" I think that is exhibit #1 as far as university bias goes.

Default jail

I think long jail sentences.

No, I think we need do no more than shed light on the subject. Although in this instance where we have the President of a university trying to smear someone because of their beliefs that is absolutely a firing offense. Too late in this instance though, he's been fired.

Summers hates "everyone", not just conservatives. Over the years he's lashed out at women, minorities, both Democratic and Republican administrations, the military, scientists, economists who don't happen to agree with his particular viewpoints (he's an economist), and so on.

He's kind of the George Bush of liberal university presidents - he rules by fear and mismanagement. No one likes him anymore - even Alan Dershowitz, who has been one of Summers' staunches supporters over the years, has refused several time recently to step in on Summers' behalf.

That's what happens to people like that. It's heppening to Summers, and it's happening to George Bush too.

It's hardly a partisan issue though - it has more to do with the man's personality and his incredible ineptness when it comes to actual implementation.

There are some good things about him though - for instance he's been a champion for the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, which just today announced a massive program to study human stem cell cloning.

Summers is now the "outgoing" President of Harvard University, so Reb you don't have to worry about him anymore.

The current system of hiring professors is based solely on academic qualifications. Its not like a professor is interviewed on their stance on abortion before they are hired. It just so happens that the most qualified candidates seem to be more liberal than conservative. Any system that goes away from hiring solely on competence would be a detriment to the education of college students. Knowledge is Americas only friend in the increasingly globalized world and nothing should be done to decrease it.
