Iraq is a mess. We caused it. We stay until it's fixed. Although I don't think we had any legitimate interests in Iraq before the war, cutting early would likely result in Iraq becoming the very terror outpost we wrongly accused it of being before the war. So, we would only be causing ourselves more pain by leaving before the job is done. If we cared what Iraqis thought about our presence we could have asked them before the war.

For me, it's actually a mix of the first two.
Personally I don't think we can trust any polls on the issue. But mostly I think we have a moral obligation to make sure things turn out alright. In doing so, we have practical reasons to show our sincerity and to prevent Iraq from becoming a terrorist-producing machine. But mostly, we must justify what we've done by actually improving the quality of life for the people of Iraq. I'd rather we be remembered as liberators rather than destroyers even if that does not necessarily reflect our original reasoning. We should support democracy whenever possible. Under no circumstances should we support a collapse into a failed state.

And how exactly can you accurately poll them without a democracy being set up and functioning?
It seems we need to finish the job before we can even manage to figure out if they really want us there or not.
