Default Congress

Why do we even give them a salary when all of them are millionaires anyway?

Why not have people voluteer to serve their country for nothing? If a salary is needed then make the states they are from pay it. Why do they sit up there with the power to vote on their own pay raises? Many go in to congress less than millionaires and leave very rich. Where does all that money come from? Isn't it obvious they are corrupt if they are sitting up there getting rich? There are plenty of people who love this country enough to volunteer for a few years to do it for free. Make it illegal to accept any money that you put into your pocket during your term of office.

Default ...

I don't know if people would do it for free. That would require them to put other jobs ahead of their congressional duties. In fact, a lot of the corruption is related toward their looking forward to potential careers after their terms.
They should get a salary. But I agree that they should not get any payouts from anyone. Period.

So change the U.S. Constitution. Otherwise, it says we must.

Sure. But to require them means drafting them. Ooops. Dems already tried that with Vietnam, and even they say they want to avoid another Vietnam.

I can see it now. Congress dweebs snagged by the Selective Service to serve two years in the Alaskan 9th House District. (Rough if you're from Florida and can't take the weather.)

(Dear Lord, we've been good, grant us just this teeny favor? Send Teddy Kennedy to Lousy-anna, please, Lord? I wanna see what he weighs after six months on Cajun food and our weather!)

This one's a bad idea. It makes that Rep or Senator too dependant upon voters back home. (*blanches and staggers back at the thought*) Could you imagine how bad pork spending would get, if we put our dweebs on a straight commission for every federal dollar they brought back to their own state?

Why oh why am I reminded of that classic BBC radio comedy catch-phrase, "You silly twisted boy" here? To prevent pay cuts.

Isn't it obvious how rich America seemed to a Chinese peasant, when her husband went to America and in miraculously short time (working as a railroad coolie) obtained enough money to bring her to the land with the streets of gold? The same for the Irish lass joining her rowdy husband, helping build Boston's Bay Bay. The same for the Scots and so many other ethnic groups.

"Welcome to America, land of opportunity!"

We used to be okay accepting that success is earned and good and honorable.

Kid, whoever taught you anything else needs to be shot out of hand.

You lost the American Dream, kid. In America you can get rich. It's okay. It's when you get rich breaking laws, then you serve time. Randy Cunningham or Jimmy "The Wig" Trafficant---same story. They serve the public by serving time....

Say, Rota? You sound genuinely indignant. Perhaps with your unique ability to locate the most far-fetched possibility now extant on any issue presented, maybe YOU should consider voluntary unpaid federal service. If you can help bring down another crook in our government, contact your local police. They will helpfully put this information into a national database, and it may become vital at some future time. Uncle Sam thanks you for your volunteerism. Your ISP is being recorded....

Hey, whatta plan! How do you eat?

We have those laws, and a system to deal with that. Randy Cunningham, a Republican, went down while a GOP president and Congress united did nada to stop it. That means the system works.

Rota? One last question. If what's fair for you is fair for your congressdweeb, then why can't he get a law passed to make it illegal for YOU to keep any money you earn?

Its only a bad idea to you because you never took the time to think about it. If the states were their masters again then they would repeal a lot of laws that required all that money to be sent to the Federal government in the first place. There wouldn't be a pot to get the pork from anymore. The pork would never leave the States.

I've heard of many good people who said they would do it without pay. Hell I would as long as they paid for the plane ride up there and a dorm room in one of those big government buildings.
