Th question is whether monkeys want to be treated like humans. Do they like being dressed up?
I have mixed feelings. I don't generally think an animal species should ever be placed in the same importance as a human (though some individual cats and dogs I place over individual humans But on the other hand, I've heard the testimony once of one who hunted chimps for a delicacy market in Africa that the creatures beg and show distress in a very human way when cornered. It sickens me that someone can kill a creature that is close enough to human to attempt to beg for its life. I also feel it's sick when people can kill a pet, an animal that is emotionally important to another human (and their property as well, but the latter makes it more sick). And in addition I find it utterly tasteless that people kill a creature for fun rather than for food or some other necessity. I appreciate the hunter that uses the animal and hunts as an expression of respect for nature, but have little regard for that rare one that kills for sport without any reverence for nature. And people who go out of their way to hit animals in the road are sick also. I feel bad for having hit a cat and an opossum over my driving career- but I tried to stop in the latter case and did not have time to react at all for the former. I think people who engage in sadistic behavior toward animals, especially after the age of 12, are borderline cold-blooded murderers. And I can't stand it when parents do not punish their kids, at least yell at them, when they take part in such behaviors. Thus I feel animal cruelty crimes should be treated more harshly than they are. These people are one step away from violence toward humans. And those who purposively kill pets should be subject to both legal and civil penalties.

One can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat animals, I have found. It is revealing of an aspect of their character that they would otherwise repress, given that it has no (other) socially acceptable mode of expression. By their actions we may know them...
