No civil liberties in Turkey and they are another good ally of ours. Probably because they are anti-soviet. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Turkey a democracy?

Default I knew it!

This article is a reinforcement of my hunch. That is: If a theocracy is established as a world order, and it's head is Islam, the FIRST to go (to die) will be the left.

I'm not saying that's a good thing. No one should be imprisoned (or worse) simply on what they wrote. But that's ideal for America, not necessarily a middle eastern or southwest asian country. This answers sputter's question:
There are democracies, and there are democracies.

to kaladrew: What's the premise of your title to the thread?

Default I think the premise is clear

speak out against your country and be subject to criminal charges.

"Istanbul's Seventh High Criminal Court overruled the decision not to proceed, following a complaint filed by a member of a group of right-wing lawyers known as the "Unity of Jurists," who have been active in the prosecutions of numerous writers and journalists in recent months."

this is why we don't have Pat Robertson in charge and why the courts better protect our media from the likes of Mike Powell and Herr Karl Roverer.

And in the original title you say "This is the direction the USA is going."

So tell us... who is being charged crimminally for speaking out against the USA?

Default exactly

It can't be denied, but there just aren't any cases to back the contention. Nothing like the histrionics of the left when it comes to the sky is falling.
