In our modern world the purpose of government is to provide for the social organisation of a given society according to the terms laid down under that nation state's laws.

It is in the nature of all government that this is done imperfectly, to fail.

It is the fate of all government to fall.

The question wholly depends on where and when you live. The Ancient Greeks would disagree with the Rennaisnance Europeans, who would disagree with the midevial fiefdoms, who would disagree with the fascists, then communists, then democrats, and so on.

The purpose of government should be to protect its citizens, nothing more, nothing less.

That means militarily, that means in ensuring equal opportunity for its citizens, and also that means not taxing them an arm and a leg.

Obviously that is a very small scope of what needs to be done, but basically I want government to stay out of peoples business. Im not talking anarchy, because anarchy is essentially socialism, and socialism is a stupid philosophy.

The government needs a reduced role, but still needs to play a role. As for national healthcare its an awful idea for so many reasons that I dont want to get off topic mentioning all of them.

why would government supplied healthcare be bad? In general does the problem lie in it's theory or it's application?

The purpose of a government varies from society to society. It is invariably, though, a tool. One must decide on an ethical goal, examine each particular problem and determine whether government intervention will help or hurt the situation. The effectiveness of the public sector, in turn, is dependent on the attitude of the people towards it.

A government must empower the masses/proletariat/workering class through increased living standards and worker control of the state by nationalizing all industry, creating universal, free, and quality healthcare, universal, free, and quality education, universal, free, and quality higher education, co-operative worker-run industry, universal, free, and quality housing, aquedate food distribution, and abolish all social classes, or simply not exsist.
