BAGHDAD, Iraq - A roadside bomb exploded Thursday in eastern Baghdad, killing four U.S. soldiers and wounding two others, the U.S. military said.

The attack began when a bomb went off as a U.S. unit was returning from a search operation in the mostly Shiite area, the military said. Moments later, a second bomb exploded, killing and wounding the soldiers.

A demolition team that searched the site after the attack found an explosively formed projectile, a type of high-tech bomb that the U.S. military believes comes from
Iran. The device was detonated by the team.

The military said a U.S. soldier was killed Wednesday in combat in Anbar province, west of Baghdad.

In addition, a Marine assigned to Multi National Force-West also died Wednesday in a non-combat related incident in Anbar, the military said in a separate statement. It said the incident is under investigation.

IRAQ SOLDIER'S GRENADE HORROR

08:00 - 16 March 2007

A soldier from East Yorkshire has suffered horrific injuries after he was hit in the face by a grenade mistakenly fired on an Army base in Iraq.

Private Christopher Ashton, 22, was hit by a grenade travelling at 1,500mph after the launcher was fired by another British soldier at Shiba base, near Basra.

He lost his eye instantly and suffered severe head injuries, with every bone in the right side of his face shattered.

Pte Ashton, who was attached to the Black Watch regiment, also suffered two strokes, leaving him paralysed down one side, and has undergone brain surgery to save his life.

Royal Military Police officers have launched an investigation and the Mail understands the other soldier involved could face a court martial.

Today, Pte Ashton's wife, Claire, originally from Hull, said: "I could have understood and accepted it better if he'd been injured in battle, but it was an accident on the base.

"We were told it was touch and go, but he's conscious now, although he's very confused. It's just turned our lives upside down."

She also revealed Prince Charles, the regiment's Colonel-in-Chief, sent her husband a personal letter and a bottle of whisky after hearing of his injuries.

Prince Charles, whose son Prince Harry will serve in Iraq, wrote: "I recently had a report from the Black Watch Battalion in Iraq and learned of your dreadful accident.

"I just wanted to write and say how much I feel for you, having to endure such frightful injuries. We are so very fortunate to have dedicated people like yourself prepared to give service in our Armed Forces in the most difficult of circumstances."

Pte Ashton, who volunteered to serve in Iraq - known in the military as Operation Telic - in November, was injured in his accommodation tent at the logistics base on January 18.

The Mail understands a corporal, sharing his tent, was cleaning an underslung grenade launcher, known as a UGL, when he accidently pressed the trigger.

The weapon, which is normally attached to the underside of rifles, is capable of firing grenades at 1,500mph that explode after travelling 350 metres.

However, because the grenade hit Pte Ashton at short range, it did not explode, probably sparing his life.

Pte Ashton, a former Cottingham High School pupil who lived in Priory Road before joining the Army at 17, was airlifted to a US military hospital in Germany, where surgeons battled to save his life.

Mrs Ashton, who lives on an Army base in Ireland with their two-year-old son Bailey, and members of their families were flown to be at his hospital bedside.

Mrs Ashton said: "He was a mess when I saw him. His body had swollen and he was twice the size he is normally and he was comatose with all the drugs. They told me it was touch and go."

When his condition stabilised, he was flown to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where Mrs Ashton remains at his bedside.

Despite controversy surrounding the care of soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan in NHS hospitals, Mrs Ashton was full of praise for the care her husband received.

She said: "The Army and the hospital staff have been fantastic. I've been given a number to ring if I have any problems and everything gets sorted out straight away.

"The Army is paying for my son to go to a cr??che in Hull so I can be at the hospital with Chris."

Pte Ashton is slowly regaining feeling in his left side, but doctors have told the couple, who have been married four years, his rehabilitation will take at least a year.

In the next few weeks, he is expected to be transferred to a military rehabilitation centre in Surrey to begin his long road towards recovery.

Mrs Ashton said: "I was worried when he told me he was going to Iraq, but I married him in the Army and I know this is his job."

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: "The Royal Military Police (Special Investigation Branch) is investigating an alleged incident that occurred on January 18 on Operation Telic.

"We are not prepared to comment further or speculate on the outcome of this investigation." a.coggan@mailnewsmedia.co.uk

That's too bad. Just the other day Jake was saying how he wanted to invite you over for some pork barbeque and beer. I guess you blew that, huh?

You should repent and thank Jesus for preventing our US leadership from completely evaporating all you arrogant little cavemen with the stores of a single Seawolf class submarine............you, your false prophets, and the innocent women and children you cowards hide behind. But US soldiers and Marines are coming for you, Bucko.

Jesus Christ arose from the dead, defeating evil and death forever. Your "lord" is still rotting in the ground. What chance do you think you have?
