I am in a particularly anti-communist mood today.

I generally think the lines we draw between capitalism and communism are slightly arbitrary and only lead us to push toward the poles.
Mixed systems tend to be the reality, regardless of starting points. Government has certain purposes. Societies have certain purposes. They are met or there is revolution or tyranny or something ugly. Of course in general terms mixed systems are capitalist in that the government does not command the means of production. But I'd also claim China is a mixed system. The government commands the means of production but also does not provide for its people. I'll take capitalism with a welfare state anyday. Communism without one is about as ugly as you can get economy-wise.
