Thread: Bill Maher said it best

  1. Default Bill Maher said it best

You have the same chance to win the lottery as you do trying to work your way to the top. This is absolute truth. Yes you can possible go from "rags to riches". But the odds are grossly stacked against you. It really is no different than playing the lottery and hope you win.

One involves solely chance. The other requires preparation, hard work and desire.

I don't know why that's tough for you to understand, nor why "the top" is the sole qualifying metric of success. Plenty of people are extremely successful, yet never reach "the top".

The whole attempt to analogize success with chance fails miserably.

It may be hard to go to "riches" but you can get an education and make something of yourself. Sure you won't necessarily become a millionaire but you can make enough money to live comfortably.

Bill Maher is not the best person to be listening to.

Yup. The top 1% own 95% of the wealth. It is silly to think you will ever be in the top 1%, a mere failure rate of 99%.
Just because I find your religion silly does not mean I am an atheist.

This from a guy who just recently got a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.

How many tickets did you have to buy before you won that lottery, Billy boy? I'll betcha it was more than one. Amirite?

I believe it was actually Larry Elder who said it best - Successful liberals do not preach what they practice. They work hard and achieve things just like conservatives but then they turn around and tell other people they can't do the same thing.

Bill Maher gets paid to be on television and tell you that you can never be like him. If you buy anything he's selling, you're being played for a fool.
"Oh, what's that? So now you say life sucks? Well, 99% of it's what you make of it. So if your life sucks, you suck." - Mike Muir

If you feel underpaid, try producing something useful. See if your net worth doesn't increase.

There are many ways to measure success.

With hard work and some intelligence, Americans have a reasonably good chance of working their way to the... call it the "upper middle". And the thing about this country is that the "upper middle" is a ridiculously high standard of living.

So in this case people are supposed to ignore the statistical averages? There are no guarantees. It's true you will never know until you at least try, but unless you were born into wealth, the odds are pretty solid, the majority will never statistically make it into the top 2-5%. There "ARE" no guarantees, and there is no magic routine that will make it so.

So the goal is to get filthy rich? I always thought it was to support your family and make an honest wage.

This thread highlghts the difference between Conservatives and Liberals nicely.

Liberals are self loathing and pessimistic.
Conservatives are hard working and optimistic!

Even that is questionable for the majority at this point.
