Default Boycott the PRC 2008 olympics

The world should boycott the People's Republic of China olympics, but of course, "the world", won't, because when it comes to the PRC, in every venue and on every ocassion, "the world" kisses the PRC's ass, ignoring that it is a dictatorship, and has the usual record of a dictatorship. If you are unfamiliar with that, check out the Amnesty International report.

http://thereport.amnesty.org/eng/Reg...-Pacific/China

Note that this is just the narrowly defined human rights of AI, ignoring that people living in a dictatorship is a profound abuse in itself.

Default yeah, yeah....

We all know, they're evil 'cause they're communist.... or whatever.....

You gotta kinda look at it from their point of view.

This is a big deal to the Chinese people.

Even the immigrants (most of whom are here 'cause they don't agree with the Chinese government, in one way or another) are very proud of their country. And Beijing is sparing no expense to make sure that the world understands it's on the map now - 'cause that's kinda what this is all about, in their eyes.

You gotta understand, this is kinda their "re-emergence", it's like, they've had this enormous cultural inferiority complex ever since Mao, but the leadership has been doggedly persistent and it seems to have worked - 'cause look where they are now.

They're building all kinds of new buildings specifically for the games, I mean, this is a big deal.

So yeah, I suppose you could try to look at this in "absolute" terms, but it seems to me, that it would make far more sense to understand this in "relative" terms.

It's "progress", not "perfection", right?

Sure they're harsh. I mean, they just executed their FDA guy, for corruption - and yeah they're pretty harsh about their one-child thing and all that, but you gotta measure all that in terms of progress relative to "their" standards, 'cause it wouldn't make any sense to hold 'em to ours.

They'll figure it out though - they're pretty smart. Seems like they're on the right track already, wouldn't you say?

Are you goint to call for a boycott of PRC goods also. Next time you go out and buy something flip it over and see what country it was made in, there is a good chance it came from China.

Peace.

The idea of being "proud" of one of the worst slave states in the world is mind-boggling.

This is a big deal to the german people.

You gotta understand, this is kinda their "re-emergence", it's like, they've had this enormous cultural inferiority complex ever since Kaiser Wilhelm, but that Hitler fellow has been doggedly persistent and it seems to have worked - 'cause look where they are now.

So yeah, I suppose you could try to look at the Nazis in "absolute" terms, but it seems to me, that it would make far more sense to understand this in "relative" terms.

Sure they're harsh. I mean, they just executed their Ernst Röhm, for being to uppity - and yeah they're pretty harsh about their jew thing and all that, but you gotta measure all that in terms of progress relative to "their" standards, 'cause it wouldn't make any sense to hold 'em to ours.

I'm going with nons on this one. The 1932 Berlin Olympics doesn't apply in my opinion because Germany was going through a steady downfall into dictatorship and facism. In other words, German was a more democratic and free society before the 1932 Olympics, so I would have supported a boycott then against the Berlin Olympics.

In China, we've seen an opposite trend. The nation has steadily progressed over the years. The China of today is a far better place to live than is was 30 years ago. Is it perfect? No, but we can't expect change overnight. Progress takes time. China's process of progress deserves some acknowledgement, which is way I don't support a boycott of the Beijing Olympics.

The point sort of blew past you - I was mainly satirizing nonsqtr's unschooled moral relativism babble.

China's progress has been strictly limited to the economic area where it has decided to stop shooting itself in the foot with socialism, but there the progress stops: newspapers are under government control, the internet is carefully censored and monitored, religious groups are oppressed, protest is violently crushed, there are no civil rights, no real elections, no disobeying the party - nothing changed since 1949.
