Default Question for Conservatives

How can conservatives recapture the republican party? I know, very broad question but I'm interested in your ideas.

Maybe the people in the party don't want that. Your options are to either vote for the people they put in front of you or not. For some reason people keep electing big government Republicans.

Not that easy. When the choice is george bush or gore, or george bush or Kerry, conservatives vote for george bush.

Well, really if you guys want to "take back" the Republican Party, you have to show you're serious by heavily organizing, setting up your own candidates, and religiously attending primary elections.
If you become the dominant force, then you'll rule the GOP.
And then the GOP will become a very small party and probably quit winning elections... but, hey, you guys will have it!

Well, who do you think would've been better, Bush or Gore? Bush was the more exeptional choice over Gore .

Two things: First, you (the GOP) had choices besides George Bush the first time out. You picked Bush. You picked the biggest government President EVER. And you did it twice. Seems to me that's on you. Second, I was given the choice of Bush-Gore, too. I didn't vote for either. I voted for the small government candidate. He lost. I'm fine with it. Because none of this is my doing I can sleep easy at night!

At the time of the election I picked neither. When faced with two really bad choices, I walk away. But that's just me. After the election I had some sympathy for the "Bush sucks, but he's better than Gore would have been" argument. I thought that might be true. 3 years later and 7 years into W's Presidency I can't buy it anymore. I find it very hard to believe anyone could be worse. Someone else could be very, very bad indeed. But worse? I don't think so.

I didn't make clear that when I say conservatives, I mean the rank and file, the grassroots. Bush was of course picked by the delegates, ie, the party establishment.

Well yes. But the rank and file did get to vote in the primaries. I know most primaries don't matter because a small number of states pick your candidate for you, but people did get to vote. And they chose Bush. The only thing you can do is vote for the Conservative in the primary and/or simply refuse to play when they nominate a Bush. Let the Democrat win. It really isn't as bad as some would have you believe. We've had tons of Democrats as President. And yet the country marches on. Every time you elect big government Republicans you set the cause back. Kick them out, let the Dems win, take back the party and jump back in. In the end it will take the true Conservatives refusing to compromise for them to get the party back.

That thought has occurred to many, but the problem is some RINOs will say "See? We've got to be more liberal like the dems, or we won't win."
