Default Detroit worst crime city.

http://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/dan.../18/50476.html

Thank you, Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick. (Hmmmm - wonder if this is another SBB black hero? )

Kwame was ranked by Time magazine in 2005 as one of america's worst mayors. He was successfully sued by two of his former body guards for violating a whistleblower law, and now he wants to pay off the suit by selling 92 of the cities parks! Detroit - Banana Republic, USA!

I feel strange defending Kwame. He's a crappy mayor and he should have lost last time... I think he won on the dead people vote.
But he's not as bad as Coleman Young was. And he's not responsible for the crime in Detroit. Detroit has been a dangerous city for quite some time and I don't think any mayor is going to change that.
If anything some of the changes to downtown Detroit that have occurred recently should over time reduce crime by sparking economic growth... Of course Michigan's overall economy is in the crapper, so that may be hard.
Also even the feds admit that those crime statistics are essentially useless, lacking context.
There are areas of Detroit you should never walk in in broad daylight. If you don't know what areas, it's best to stay away from all neighborhoods. But downtown is safe. I've yet to hear of people getting mugged on busy streets in daylight while others walk by, the way I've heard people describe New York. Most of the crime is below the nose, black on black, drug related. And no mayor is going to stop that.
Even if the city had the money, I ust don't think there are enough people willing to be the cops necessary to stop these crime issues.

The fundamental purpose of government is the safety of its citizens. Anyone who subscribes to the "garsh, we just have no clue why this happens" theory should get out and make way for somebody like Guilliani, who can succeed against criminals.

Right - a mayor, with the authority of govenment and a police department can't take on crime.

Not if the problem outstrips his resources. As is often the case in poor cities, where everything is underfunded.

Java, except maybe in the outer boroughs, you don't usually hear about people being mugged in NYC in broad daylight while everyone around ignores it. Walk through the projects or *really* bad neighborhoods, and it might happen; it's a big city. But Manhattan, for instance, is probably safer (other than petty property crime) than most places.

That's partly because the city is very wealthy, so it can afford things like the world's largest municipal police force (37,000 officers). And its geographically compact.

Los Angeles, for instance, has half as many people (3.8 million vs. 8.2 million) but it's spread out over a larger area (469 square miles vs. 322 square miles) and patrolled by *far* fewer police (9,500).

Which helps explain why crime in LA is far worse than crime in NYC.
