Even more disturbing is that the female half of the European population has altogether rejected its biological role in society, bequeathing onto Europe fertility rates that could leave the continent with 1/3 fewer inhabitants, and a lot more gray hair, in just a few decades. European men, with their tight pants and soft, I-phone toting hands might just be too feminine to appeal to women who want a traditional protector/provider. This is compounded by the fact that in Italy, more than 30% of men under the age of 35 still live with their parents. Whether this phenomena is due to a stagnant economy, or if other new cultural trends are being sewn, is unknown.

If these are not the symptoms of a broken society, I am Elvis Presley. The question is, what has caused such a dramatic shift in the role of the European man in just one or two generations? Why do so many Western men take a pass on perpetuating themselves genetically? The reason must be pretty serious, whatever it is. For so many smart European males to simply let their good genes go to the grave. Natural instincts are difficult to kill off, but, it appears, (my) generation of European men is the first in nearly 100,000 years to have little interest in making sure they leave a trace of themselves on planet Earth. Poooooof!

There is this odd social phenomenon in America, ever since World War II basically, where every generation of men has seemed kind of gay to the generation right beforehand. But I think it's more because of the bad guys. 'Cause you've got THE GREATEST GENERATION, as Tom Brokaw put it (good book by the way), and they're like, "We fought the Nazis! We stormed the beaches at Normandy and we saved the world from an Orwellian nightmare of biblical proportion!" And then the next generation is like, "Well, we fought communist Chinese! Vast hordes of them!" And then the next generation is like, "Well, we fought an assortment of Asians, mostly in the southeast ... but it wasn't much fun and it was pretty miserable in the jungle and it went on way too long and nobody was quite sure what the point was." And then the next generation is all, "Well, we ... engaged in some covert things that we really shouldn't have for a while ... but I think we were actually fighting against democracy in a lot of places? How did that happen? I'm not even sure who were fighting. Just ... people, I think." And the current generation is now sort of, "Well ... we think there might be some bad guys ... sort of ... over there, somewhere ... probably in the middle of that crowd ... why are we bothering with this, again?"

Personally, I've always been a little perplexed by the idea that masculinity is defined primarily by the enthusiasm with which one embraces violence -- not their actual effectiveness at violence, mind you, but simply how eager they are to engage in it.

Some people that think that being manly is a matter of getting your way all the time, forcing your will on others, bringing not just order but your order to the world whether the world wants it or not. I disagree.

What kind of bars do you frequent? Social expectations are based on biological differences. Men and women have different libidos. The genders are biologically different both physically and psychologically.

You are saying such absurd things that a counter argument merely consists of stating the blatantly obvious like "The genders are biologically different both physically and psychologically."

Anyway, I'm just dying to know where you got the idea that marriage was not for the masses. Please, if you have a source I'd love to spend some time mocking it more thoroughly.

I think it's a few things.

First off, business has changed a lot. In the days before feminism came to the fore in business, it was a rough and tumble men's world. It was not a place where you were expected to hide your masculinity. Business was tough, and if you weren't good at business, you lost. Now you can be good at business but lose because you put up a pin-up girl calender in the office.

Second, as traditional christianity and traditional western culture has come more and more under attack, the ideals of masculine and feminine became suspect as well. The ideal taught by the church was that men were the leaders, heads of the family, and worked for a living. As the stuffy bible was removed, those ideas became seen as limiting, wrong, and backwards.

thirdly, cutbacks in schools coupled with title 9 and fear of lawsuits have removed sports from schoolyards. This means that males no longer grow up learning to compete for what they want. Men who don't compete tend to lose at competitions and thus avoid it. Then they tend to think no one can compete because they can't and thus feel the need to try to rig the game to make it "fair" for everyone else.

What's weird to me is that both extremes seem to be coming out. One the one hand are the girly men, the ones the OP is talking about. But, there is the other extreme as well -- extreme sports and MMA and death defying stunts done by men of the same age. I think all i can say is that our boys have no idea what real manhood is.
