Thread: Why American political labels make no sense

  1. Default Why American political labels make no sense

I was scrolling through threads today, and it absolutely astounded me how often people would politically collectivize others based purely on assumptions and judgements. It's "left" this and "right" this, but how can one not realize how minimal the difference is between "left" and "right" in American politics? It's all partisan on this site! It makes it nearly impossible to have a legitimate discussion!

"Obama is the worst president of all time! I don't know why, i just like saying he's a bad president!"
"No way you're a stupid conservative Obama's just cleaning up after Bush's mess! NDAA is cool and the Libyan Intervention wasn't for oil because Obama's in the White House now!"
    It's absolutely ridiculous.

Bush sucked, Obama sucks just as much, if not, more. They are both Statists. There is minimal difference in their ideology. Congress is full of Statists. The Supreme Court is full or statists. Every day more of our freedoms are being taken away. Every day the dollar decreases in value. Every day more Palestinians are murdered by the Israeli government. Every day war with Iran and Syria inches closer, and we are reduced to discussions about contraceptives and Rush Limbaugh, name calling back and forth about radio hosts calling someone a slut?! "Oh... well Rush apologized but Maher didn't apologize and sixteen years ago Letterman made fun of Bristol Palin on his talk show why isn't he being sued for slander?" Give me a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing break.

We have to unite. We have to come to our senses. There is no "left" vs. "right." It's you vs. the State.
"Some things are believed because they are demonstrably true, but so many are believed simply because they have been asserted repeatedly."

    -Thomas Sowell

I think any political labels tend to discourage critical thinking and hinder discussion, with American ones it is just more apparent due to their two-party system and strong polarisation. Despite arguing politics for years, I really dont know what label I would describe myself with, except maybe secularist.

The whole two party system thing is meant to do exactly that... divide and conquer.. limit options, pretty much empowering an oligarchy that puts on the front of operating like a democratically elected representative government
"There comes a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part, you can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies on the gears, and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus. And you've got to make it stop
