Thread: Is it just me or does it seem like the religious right is taking over America?

  1. Question Is it just me or does it seem like the religious right is taking over America?

Hi there, this is my first post. I decided to come to a political forum to maybe get some feedback from some people and hopefully not trolling.

Anyways, I feel like the religious right is starting to take over the government. At the very least they have taken over the Republican party which might as well be called the Christian Fundamentalist Party at this point. I actually like some of the classic Republican ideals myself, but I don't see these being practiced by the majority of the Republicans. All I ever see them talk about is moral issues like gays, birth control, and passing legislation based on their religious beliefs. Look at the candidates that we've had so far: Perry, Bachman, Santorum, etc. Who could vote to have their rights taken away?

I have nothing against religion. I don't personally believe in any religion, but I am not some rabid anti-theist. However, I do believe that I have the right to live my life without people forcing their religious beliefs on me.Maybe its just because I am located in Tennessee,( a state where the notorious "Don't Say Gay" bill was passed) that I feel this way, given the power of religion here.

Things like the bill in Arizona that gives employers the right to fire a woman if she uses birth control are things that scare me. This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that would be passed in Tennessee. I really don't see how someone can do that. Doesn't that violate HIPAA laws? Can a Jehovah's Witness tell someone they can't have a blood transfusion? After all, their religion tells them that's wrong.

They think that their religion should control everyone's lives. Schools aren't supposed to teach basic biology or sex education because it might offend them. Why can't they just let their kid stay home on that day? Do my kids and everyone else's kids have to get the education they think is correct?

Not only do they obsess over violating the private lives of others, they also don;t make any sense with their reasoning on things :

I realize that they loathe abortion. That's fine. But they also hate contraception which PREVENTS abortion since no ovulation happens in the first place. They don't want abortion or contraception, but they don't want to support "welfare babies" with their taxes either, which would be the result of making contraception harder to get. Also they don't want sex education which could prevent pregnancy as well.

Another thing I don't get: if they want religious laws passed, then what religion gets the pass those laws? Even in Christianity there are many denominations. Catholics and Protestants obviously don't believe in the same thing. Why would a Catholic get to pass a law against birth control, when many Protestants don't have any problem with it?

I'd like feed back from different people. Also, just for the record I think ALL politicians are sleazy liars, not just Republicans.

Most don't want religious laws back. I think they just want to bring back a little sanity and common decency back which we seemed to have lost.

How about the old habit of getting married before having children? How about sending your kids to the movies without the fear of hearing a cuss word every two minutes. How about going through the day without having to get high on something.

If our forefathers could see what we have done to freedom of speech, they would be rolling over in their grave. Rap music about killing cops or raping your own mother? Come on people. Can't we put out a movie without every other word a cuss word? How about showing a little respect to others? What happened to our values that we had?

I have lived a long time and saw a lot of changes along the way. But we have lost any kind of values that we once had. The only positive I can see is that we have better race relations than we use to, but even that has a long way to go yet.

We have the attitude if we want to do it, go ahead. Nothing is off limits.

Can you explain what you mean by "common decency"?

Common decency compared to what time in our history?

I love these relative morals discussions because people seem to think that "we" were MUCH better people at <insert time in history here>.

“Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit. Social Security is totally funded by the payroll tax levied on employers and employees. If you reduce the outgo of Social Security, that money would not go into the General Fund to reduce the deficit, that would go into the Social Security Trust Fund. So Social Security has nothing to do with balancing the budget or lowering the deficit.” –Ronald Reagan

    It's just you.

All the things you mentioned are reactions to agendas being pushed by the left. Don't get it twisted.

I think that issues of social behavioral control (issues that both "sides" of the ultimately Progressive amerikan establishment rant and rave likes hypocrites on) can be blamed on those in power, having in tow, a Utopian agenda. Extreme Leftism, if you will.

How is the Right Wing "Extreme Leftism"? I don't want people to control my behavior if I am not hurting anyone.

Nobody is trying to control your behavior. It sounds like you're just regurgitating what you heard on MSNBC.

These things come in cycles. The right-wing has been particularly fervent about pushing the values on everybody else through legislation for the past decade or so. When the pushback comes, and I'm thinking it will come in the next few years, it is going to be harsh.

I'm saying that what appears to be right wing morality code, is nothing more than one of the dummy "choices" given to us by an ultimately Utopian-ist Progressive Govt. Who benefits when it boils down to issues like Population Control?
