Welp - that's pretty much the picture, isn't it? Unfortunately, I have absolutely NO faith whatsoever - ZERO - ZILCH - in the American voter's ability to understand ANYTHING beyond the cesspool level of the thirty-second pack of lies and distortions know as the "soundbite"...

Yes, socialism has been around since the beginning, but only on the familial and communal (tribal) level where resources were voluntarily and necessarily exchanged between family members and tribal relatives, and EVERYONE was expected to WORK or DIE. The international proletarian statism that was advocated by Marx, however, is a relatively recent phenomena that in no way resembles the organic communism of ancient hunter-gatherers and tribal subsistence farmers. It is authoritarian, technocratic, and morally reprehensible and has destroyed millions of lives and wasted trillions of dollars worth of wealth.

Johnny-C, not wanting to seem piling on, I'm curious to know what incentive to achieve there could be, knowing that success will simply support non-achievers?

Back in my day, the 40-60's, we had a small class of people who made a job traveling around from city to city, sponging off the various "benevolence" sources, sometimes with many children and the men were part of the operation. Today it almost seems Governments have taken over the jobs, probably for the many jobs it's created to administer other people money, not to mention the votes it generates for the so called liberals....

Nonsense. A pauper gets the exact same vote as a billionaire. If the rich control the government, it's because dumb Americans allow them to. And just so you know, California is a direct democracy where the masses can vote on whatever the hell they want. That's why it's such a miserable failure. I'm sick of people trying to pawn the blame off on the "rich", as if we Americans had no responsibility or ability to steward the republic. If our system is broke, it's because the moral fiber of the populace has decayed, and it has decayed largely because too many people have been duped into supporting the recycled socialism of progressive ideology. People want something for nothing and being a lazy bum is considered a virtue by many of these socialist scumbags. So don't blame the "rich", blame the dumb Americans who keep voting for progressives.

  5. Default Laissez-Faire Capitalism isn't all America needs.

I don't advocate what you suggest. Even so, I know that capitalism operating with no checks and balances, will lead only to disaster.

Now CORPORATIONS have mastered the concept of "sponging"; and there is virtually NO COMPARISON considering the damage they have done and WILL do to this society.

Today it almost seems Governments have taken over the jobs, probably for the many jobs it's created to administer other people money, not to mention the votes it generates for the so called liberals....
If corporations don't actually police themselves and allow greed to propel them in purpose, why wouldn't the "people" not step in via government, to fill the void (or what is typically lacking in corporations)?

  6. Default Money Corrupts

But because of the ways in which wealth is embraced legally, the billionaire's voice is exponentially louder or more influential than that of the middle class American.

That has clearly been a direct cause of oppression and corruption. (Anyone can see this; though not all do.)

We need to FIX (or affect) the source of the problem (money in politics).

The only way capitalism is doomed is if the people reelect this progressive liberal that now occupies the WHITE HOUSE. Another 4 years of this doomsday scenario and we'll be looking at another fallen Roman empire.

Not only that but they're sickeningly wrong. Kotkin is no fan of Jerry Brown and has predicted the "end" of California under his green leadership. He's a fan of Brown's father, who enjoyed old-time democrat ties with the big banks and the rich.

California is sick not because of liberal policies, but because of Republican greed during the dot-com era.
On December 14, 2012, a gunman entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and opened fire, killing what is currently being reported as a minimum of 27 people, 20 of whom were children.

It's time to stop the violence. Our Second Amendment rights are long overdue a reevaluation. How many more senseless and entirely PREVENTABLE shootings have to occur before we do something about gun control?

Capitalism unchecked, is equal to failure. That can be proven.

It is not unchecked or have you forgotten the myriad of laws governing business?
The gun control crusade today is like the Prohibition crusade 100 years ago. It is a shared zealotry that binds the self-righteous know-it-alls in a warm fellowship of those who see themselves as fighting on the side of the angels against the forces of evil. It is a lofty role that they are not about to give up for anything so mundane as facts-- or even the lives of other people. ~ Thomas Sowell
