I think you are mistaking cause for consequence, Cat. The human species, as a whole, are close-minded, tribal, and violent. Religion is just one expression of these behaviors. A good example is the enlightenment you speak of, which, in France alone, led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, in wars and persecutions. The guillotine was invented during the enlightenment, and those who invented and used it did so "for the betterment of man."

The French revolution is not part of the Enlightenment, even though the challenges the Enlightenment posed to medieval society eventually lead to the upheaval that caused the revolution. Some ideas that came from the Enlightenment are natural rights, freedom, and the superiority of logic. Some ideas that came from the French revolution are totalitarianism, Rousseauian ideas of the sovereign, and the supremacy of beliefs. In many ways, they are complete opposites.

I do not think Islam should be (or can be) destroyed.

Islam just needs to go through an Enlightenment as Christianity was forced to go through in the 18th century.

Which will render Islam so metaphorical it will be metaphoricalised (I coin yet another word) into a civilized irrelevance.

At which point Muslims may realise their poem was about God, not actually God.
