Default Hypothetical prez reaction - you supply

9/11/08. News item:

"Today al qaeda, tired of the interference of the pakistani government in northern pakistan, in conjunction with some of the pakistani security forces, executed a coup. One their leaders, Mustafa ben Amistake, said: 'we now have control of 50 nuclear devices, and associated production facilities. Now the west will feel the wrath of Allah'".

The US president reserves prime TV time on all networks to respond to the crisis. Here is what each possible president said:

McCain: (fill in the speech)

Hillary: (fill in the speech)

Obama: (fill in the speech)

What do you think each would say?

McCain:
"The recent events in pakistan has put America in clear and present danger of
nuclear attack by a terrorist threat. Since the commandeered nuclear weapons
do not have the capacity to reach the US I did not order immediate strikes on
these well know facilities. However communications have already been made with
regional allies to reach an agreement on how to deal with this unacceptable
terrorist threat. Future air strikes are not ruled out."

Hillary:
"The recent events in pakistan has put America in clear and present danger of
nuclear attack by a terrorist threat. There will be no option excluded to resolve
this threat. I have already had personal conversations with other heads of state
that lead me to belive we have nothing but support in our rejection of this situation.
Air strikes against the nuclear facilities held by these insurgents are an option, but
prudence is called for in action"

Obama:
"The recent events in pakistan has put America in clear and present danger of
nuclear attack by a terrorist threat. We are already working to convene a
UN assembly to address this new development. I have already had personal
conversations with other heads of state that lead me to belive we have nothing
but support in our rejection of this situation. I will personally be attending the UN
meetings on this issue".

I think bla-bla summed it up really well at least for initial reactions.

.....

After that I think McCain would take out every possible target the military could find asap.
Hillary Clinton would probably do the same.
Both having enough sense to realize every minute that passes means some of the weapons would be moved.

Obama would talk and talk and talk until boom.

That is only if you reject the influence of a gifted diplomat.

Obama is a Liberal socialist, but he does have skills.

Actually Bush would still be in office so they might be reacting to what he did.

Lets say in this case that he decides to go the cowboy route again and his diplomacy consists of offering India control of whatever they can grab while launching a pre-emptive strike before India can be hit (like as not a conventional one though). Probably trying to get as much in the air as possible. Civilians are probably being cut down at a good pace since people fleeing a combat zone and people smuggling nuclear weapons out of the country look about the same.

MCCain -Would criticise some details. But generally back the action now that it's happened.

Hillary - Lots of criticism but might not say she'd do anything fundamentally different.

Obama. -throw down some condemnation and call for a halt.

All three would say they'd have used more and/or better diplomacy.

McCain: The coup yesterday in Pakistan, resulting in the acquisition of nuclear devices which could be dispersed anywhere in the world to be used for blackmail and al qaeda's penchant for mass murder, except this time on a vast scale, is simply unacceptable. The new regime in Pakistan is completely illegitimate - essentially a gang of thigs which have seized a country. I have put US military forces worldwide on alert, and conveyed to the new Pakistani regime that all nuclear devices must be brought together in one place where they will be impounded, together with the production facilities. If they agree, US experts and a number of military forces will be sent to Islamabad to effect the impounding. If agreement is not reached by 7pm EDT tomorrow, I and a few other interested countries will begin military action against pakistan.

Obama: A new government is in power in Pakistan. Some of the public statements of the government has given the US government concern. In response to this event, I will consult with other members of the UN security council tomorrow, and nake efforts to obtain a strongly worded resolution opposing the government's threat with their newly acquired nuclear weapons. I have also asked the FBI to investigate this affair.

We know what Bush would do. He'd order one NG unit into Pakistan to pursue AQ. Then he'd launch a massive invasion against Iran.
