Default Let's say I broke into your house...(Immigration)

Let's say I broke into your house...

I found this floating around the internet a while ago:

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests. Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.

But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house)."

According to the protesters:

· You are Required to let me stay in your house
· You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan
· You are Required to Educate my kids
· You are Required to Provide other benefits to me and to my family
(my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house.

And what a deal it is for me!!! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior.

Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you to learn MY LANGUAGE so you can communicate with me!

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America...

I am assuming you are referring to the "illegal immigrants" in the analogy?

It's an interesting analogy that contains a number of flaws that I am unable to fully disentangle at 12:30 a.m. here but will keep my mental gears grinding on for a while . . .

Immigrants should be allowed to stay because they are good for America.

They help the economy. Even in a country with a high population density like Germany they help the economy. They take in refugees and immigrants from anywhere and even provide them with social services, but they certainly appear to have a strong economy.

There is no justifiable reason to limit the number of visas we give out, I would challenge you to present one.

Illegal aliens are devastating for the country. They are law breakers, making a mockery of our legal immigration system, and the people who enter legally. The illegal aliens fill our jails and leech off the welfare system. They've driven up medical costs by going to the emergency room and not paying - their unpaid bills are cost shifted onto americans. They commit crimes and then duck back to mexico. They are a big burden on our education system - in LA, they have to be taught to write in spanish before they can learn to write in english, because they are illiterate. The LA school systems has had to hire teachers from mexico to teach them. They are balkanizing our country and distorting it's politics - who wants to end up like yugolslavia? There isn't an ounce of truth in the claim that we "need" to have 20 million illiterate underclass mexicans dumped on us. Instead of supplying exploitable black market labor for a few labor intensive industries and votes for the democrat party, they're only use, we should be bringing in young, highly educated and skilled people from europe and asia to help us compete in the global economy.

I agree that legal immigrants should stay, and legal immigrants should continue to come here. Legal immigrants work inside our system; they pay taxes, follow the law, contribute to the system that helps support them.

Illegal immigrants, on the other hand, break the law by being here, help to encourage unfair labor practices, and place our incredible strains on our educational and medical systems.

Immigration is vital to the US. Our nation was build on the backs on people looking for a better life and prosperity. A steady flow of immigrants helps to offset the death rate, adds to our culture, and infuses our society with new life.

Let's say I have a warehouse, filled with food water and other things. I live there with 300 of my friends. Across the street is another warehouse with 300 people living there but the strongest ten are taking half of the supplies for themselves.

Meanwhile, in my warehouse we notice that someone has been cleaning the floor, cleaning the windows, repairing our equipment. We discover that 22 of our neighbors have snuck into our warehouse and have been living there for some time. They offer to do all of the hardest jobs and work for us, if we only allow them to remain in my warehouse and take less than a full share of our supplies.

Now we have a choice:

We can allow them to stay and save them from the corruption across the street. They will take some of the work burden away from us, and offer to take a lesser ration than the rest of us.

Or, we can force them back into their deplorable conditions across the street where they were denied a fair share of the supplies, keep that little extra bit of our stockpiles for ourselves but we have to do all of the work.

I think that sounds a little better.
