Default The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom

The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom.

Quote:
The series consists of three, one-hour programmes which explore the concept and definition of freedom, specifically "how a simplistic model of human beings as self-seeking, almost robotic, creatures led to today's idea of freedom."
This is about freedom and the human mind, not party politics, so lets try and keep it nice. There are 6 parts to each episode (60 mins) and there are 3 episodes. If the way we think as a society interests you, then you should like this. First episode for example covers "game theory", how people are naturally selfish and the cold war among other things.

The other parts can be accessed from here

Hmm. I have found one way to stop robotic thinking a little bit. I try to ignore advertisement because I think advertising and marketing pierces our brains too much. As in if I watch TV, I turn away or close my eyes from commercials. If I listen to the radio, I turn it off during commercials. I don't watch a lot of movies unless I've heard its an excellent movie without advertising. I've been reading a lot more books lately, because I've found that it is much more difficult to place blatant advertisement in books, but this is just my opinion.

I guess I'm starting to become literally sick of advertisements.

No matter how good you think you are at ignoring advertising, you're not. It's not an insult and I don't mean you personally, anyone. It gets into your subconscious whether you like it or not. But I understand what you're saying, you can limit it's effect.

Watch the documentary though, it's not about advertising.

Yeah I know you can't totally do away with it, but at least try to minimize it. There are a lot of places on earth that haven't been inundated with advertisement, I wish I could find those places though!

Not many. When you go to the Himalayas and you'll see trash left on the mountain paths, a crushed coke can for example, it's an advertisement (although they don't have shops there to buy a coke lol). You'd have to go somewhere where no one's been before, not an easy thing to do.

I'm watching these video clips. The problem is we could go into a more in depth discussion of this, but the topic goes beyond politics, society, and economics. It would be nice if we could have an open minded discussion about this issue, but this is a political forum.

Let loose don't worry, if it's about this video or something on it then this is the right place for it. An there's a place for everything in this forum not just politics.

So I've watched the first and second parts. I'll watch the third in a bit. This video at times seems like its all too much.

I'll finish the third and then make some comments...

I haven’t had time yet to watch the whole thing, but I just wanted to say I've been thinking about one idea it mentioned at the very start for a while now. My biggest complaint about our system is it basically treats everyone and everything as numbers... Specifically, we are capitalist, money making machines and as such, the most economically powerful country in the world. I only question if this should actually be our goal. It seems to ignore the fact that we are human or at least reduces the purpose of humanity to accumulating wealth. I would think we should have stronger social purposes than that. If you don't maximize profits, then you don't fit in. A bunch of money making machines we are, where does the system leave room to be human?
