Huh. Don't know if RH has me set to ignore, but I was curious so I googled a bit more.

Here are some figures from Texas a while ago. Not the most up to date info, but it's got demographical data.
http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/research.../dempov97.html

Some highlights
41.80% of the people in poverty are under 18
43.68% of the people between 18 and 65 ARE WORKING, and 8.29% are looking.
An unknown percentage of those remaining are watching the kids at home and the like.
10% are over 65.

For the kids in poverty the biggest group are just with a single mother 48.12% though a surprising number have both parents. 41.46%

So kids, people who are working, and people who are retirement age make up 72% of the people in poverty. (and in the remaining 28% are people who are handicapped, caring for the children full time, or those crazy guys we get yelling in the middle of the street.)

So the could work but doesn't crowd, while real, makes up a small minority of the people under the poverty threshold.

Though on the note of that minority

we get some

out where I am, spanging around the public transportation.

I pay for my mums lawns to be cut the current rate is £35 0r $70 an hour over here.

One of the new fights I am involved in is the current European Capital of Culture Liverpool, with its history of slavery, has opened a new cruise ship terminal, and the city is trying to attract US cruise companies like Carnival and Royal Carrib.

The average wage for a waiter is $50 a month + tips, they work on average 28 days in that month starting at 6am and ending at 11pm if they are lucky!

We are trying to stop these modern day american slavers entering the port of liverpool.

Your min wage I think is in the US about $6 an hour, this does not apply to waiting staff who get tips(the average rate is $2,50 per hr) over here its about $11 an hour.

Tips are drying up in both cases due to the bad state of your economy.

According to my sources, the minimum wage in Australia was around $13.74 per hour. This has since been raised by $10.26 per week. I'd imagine the minimum wage now would be around $14.50, going by what my fellow work mates currently earn.

This Website seems to explain a little about the minimum wage in America, going State by State. It seems the minimum wage is somewhere around the $6.00 mark.

I found this piece: There are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates from 1st October 2007 are:

£5.52 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older
A development rate of £4.60 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive
£3.40 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age.
from This Website, detailing the different types of minimum wage. I believe Australia has this, too. For those under 18, I believe the minimum is around $7.00.

I guess it's a matter of supply and demand. Waiting tables doesn't take much skill and if a person can't find a better paying job, at least he can be a waiter. It seems to me that if the economy is so bad, these people would be thankful for the job they have.

Big deal, there are pressures with any job.

I keep hearing this as if it is an epidemic, but I have never actually seen anyone living on welfare who has one? Not one that Rent Center isn’t looking for anyway!

There must be a way to make fuel out of poor people.

If minimum wage puts a person above poverty (if they work full time) then why are there impoverish (healthy) people? Can they not find work? And, if they can not find work, then wouldn't supply side reaganomics be the best solution? Meaning that we should give money to businesses in order to create more jobs for people.
Let’s see you can work 30-40 hours a week, and still be eligible for government handouts? Or? You can stay at home and watch the big screen, and get the same subsidies, plus much, much, more!

They are given the choice, they are in control! That’s the problem!
