AFI was in the headlines in recent weeks after it emerged that New York state had fined Franken $25,000 for failure to pay workers’ compensation insurance while employing people from 2002 to 2005. Franken paid the penalty and an $833 fine for failing to pay disability insurance.

if this was Halliburton it would be Bush's Fault or Cheney or Ms. Rice

This also looks like his accountant's problem, not his. After all, you set up corporations and hire accountants so you don't have to think about stuff like this.
I'm guessing that Al Franken is not a tax expert in 17 states. Or anywhere. Which is why his story is plausible. That's not to say it is true, but it is plausible that Al's tax returns are not prepared by Al. And he's not likely to notice a tax law error.

That is plausible, though you don't have to be a tax expert to know tax is due where earned. Hasn't he heard of pro athletes paying state income taxes in various states where they play? He needs to make firing his CPA a top priority if he didn't know this one.

True. But I would bet lots of people don't know that. I wouldn't be surprised if most people didn't know that. They just assume if they live in Arizona they pay their taxes to Arizona. According to the article he did pay taxes. He just paid them to the wrong place. Based on that I think it likely was a mistake. Had he totally evaded paying them I would take the other side.

No doubt. I can see how Al might not know. But for his CPA to not know is totally unacceptable.

Yes he did say that his accountant "made a mistake". But aren't we all responsible for paying, or seeing to it that our taxes are paid? I wonder who in Als entourage made the mistake in NY by not paying into workmens comp?
