Yeah I remember my senior year of high school (1999) I paid 98 cents per gallon.

98 cents for what was it? 3.7 litres? We paid 99 cents for a litre, so compared to what you were paying...WE WERE ROBBED!!!

Most of the petrol seems to have been watered down, which is yet another trick by the petrol companies out to get our cash...

Yeah its right around 3.7 liters.

If you want to get technical, 1 Gal = 3.78541178 L

So yeah in 1999 in the State of Utah in the United States I clearly remember paying .98 cents per Gallon (or 3.7 L) of Gasoline.

Now in 2008, only 9 years later I am paying almost 3.50 per gallon or 3.7 L.

Clearly something awful happened over that time period. lol.

Default In The 50s Gas Was Around 30 35 cents

minimum wage was at 60 to 90 cents, do the numbers. Also in the 50s folks in Europe were walking, riding bikes and mopeds, their cars were little more than wheelbarrows. I think if you did a study, you would find that politicans perks and salarys far out stripted any increase in fuel costs in the past 60 years.

Part of the problem is that Americans have refused to look for oil in our own lands. We only used the large fossil fuel deposits that jumped up and bit us in the face (texas). We have in place a moratorium on looking for and extracting oil deposits in places like ANWAR and off the gulf coast. We need to tell our congress that we want to be less dependent on foriegn oil.
Some of the strides that auto makers and researchers have made have been great and I fully support those. But all Americans aren't suddenly gonna buy hydrogen fuel cell cars the day they become commercially available so a longer term solution is needed. It will take years (and I mean, years) before those burgeoning technologies truly hit the marketplace and become cheap enough for all of us to own one.
What we need to do is start drilling where we know there's oil and take it to the market here. We need to stop regulating the different "mixes" of gasoline that play havoc with the market on a seasonal basis (winter and summer mix). We need to make a choice. Are we going to save the planet or save ourselves?

Doesn't help that you have some places rigging prices to get more money out of the public, although thankfully there are now laws in place to prevent this from happening anymore.
o.O no there's not.

I can remember my dad telling me a story about when he was a kid, he used to have a go kart, and I asked him how he paid for the gas at 12 years old. He said, "We just collected bottles and cans and took them to be recycled." I was amazed by this because I have never paid less than $3/gallon.

I still think that oil companies are making too much money to have those prices that high. I understand that crude oil has gone up but couldn't they take a smaller percentage in profits.
