Puerto Rico and Guam were both offered independence, and both refused although they act as independent countries in many respects. Some Native American nations today act as independent countries in some respects but not others (although each of them is independent from the individual laws of the state the nation is in). Texas was a separate country and chose to join the United States. SC, NC, FL, GA, TN, LA, AL, MS, VA, AR, TX all attempted to separate from the United States unsuccessfully.
Within the federal system some things are left to the states while others are handled by the feds. this balance has shifted over the years with states having varying degrees of independence from the federal government. Under the Articles of Confederation each state was an independent country that entered into a cooperative agreement with the other independent countries that were former British colonies in North America. this system did not work effectively and was scrapped in favor of the federal system of the Constitution. In the end, we are a hybrid of the strong central government and a confederation of independent countries. |

Thank the founders for Federalism, the greatest system on earth. The federal government is restricted, people get to make laws that suite them, and are not subject to the laws of everybody else. Freedom reigns. If people in California wanted to tell me how to live my life than I would recommend using the government's power to prevent the development of different systems of government (in this case, a socialist republic) in the country to take them down. The main reason why we broke with Britain was because we thought their laws were unjust, because we had different local interests. Therefore we should love a system that allows people to let their voice be heard. Anyone who suggests otherwise probably lives in California or New York and favors a Rousseauian totalitarian government system where everybody is subject to the general will and has no rights. God Bless America.

If you would like to use marijuana[for medical use], the best state is California.
If you are are a sex offender, you had better move to the states don't have death penalty. If you are an attorny in centrain state, you had better stay in that state as long as you live. Otherwise you may need to go back to school or past another board exam. If you want an abortion, you had better move to a state that abortion is legal. If you need to rob a bank, you had better rob the local banks instead of federal banks, because the sentence is lighter. If.... Why we all live in the same country but under so many different rules? Is this good for our country. I really wonder? Republic of America certainly can make us more united and strong as a nation. Last edited by jcwang; 05-06-2008 at 01:33 PM. |

The point is that people need to make their laws for themselves, and exercise good judgment.
