Thanks. Putting an optimistic spin on it to my mind, I just see it leading to more shootings, seeing as more on-edge people will have a gun strapped to them, and those with pre-medititaion will have greater ease- indeed, now they could shoot and fade into the background, if the're kanny enough.

Anyways, the original point was about them getting off the 1st shot, and if people really do relax regards guns as you say, then they will- and now we've moved away from best case scenario as has been acheived elsewhere in the world. Its shifty eyes or bust imo.

Hmm, I wonder how undergrads will handle a hostage situation...maybe they should have a secondary school subject on the issue. Sure it'll take time from English and Math etc, but algerbra will become even less useful if you get shot after all.

Here is my belief: Regardless of how crazy people are, if the message that they will be killed if they shoot someone is driven into their psyche, their plans will be foiled from stage 0. Regardless of how crazy somebody is, if death is shown as a reality they will stop acting toward that consequence. Most crazy people with plans, and who are unafraid of or eager for death, require their plans to be specific, and usually including some element of control of the situation. Otherwise, they are unhappy with the results. If onething about the reality of the situation changes, their plans will change. If the reality is that one shot at somebody else will result in your death, the crazy people will see no control gained from such situation, and they will fail to be able to make the mark on the world that they would have liked to have made. All this means they wouldn't do it.
