School delema: 9 year old boy wants to be girl with parents support!!
A 9 year old boy has put this school in a big situation. Would you let your son wear girls clothes to school? His liberal parents are the problem.
The Haverford School District consulted experts on transgender children, then sent letters to parents advising them that the guidance counselor would meet with the school's 100 third-grade students to explain why their classmate would now wear girls' clothes and be called by a girl's name. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/local/18543504.html

This kid might just be wanting attention. But nevertheless, I don't think the book is closed as far as the distinguishment between male and female and the "correctness" of identifying one way or the other. You may be genetically male or female, but there are cases where people are biologically caught in the middle... through birth defect or otherwise, I think it is completely understandable how one can feel as they have developed as the "wrong sex" even if they have a penis. I don't think it requires medical attention to force one to act in line with their penis or vagina. There is more to sex than just your genitals.

My mum has a blood group that only allowed her to have males, my mother and father always wanted a daughter, so to help I wore a dress till i was 21yrs old and it did not affect me

Children can be transgendered at a young age - it's about the time you first start to realise you are 'trapped' in the wrong body.
Transgendered children should be supported, and encouraged to be themselves, but I worry about the reaction this child will receive. He will be teased, there is no doubt about that. I worry about his mental state being affected by the torment likely to follow his decision to wear a dress to school. Perhaps his parents can let him wear a dress at home. He could go by a girls name at school if he wished, use the teachers rest rooms, but I would draw the line at wearing female clothes.

I know we live in a society where things like this have become accepted, but this is not normal. There is no other indicator to your gender besides wether you have a penis or a vagina. If you have a penis, and think you are a woman, you need serious mental help!

As it is easier to change the body, people undergo sex change operations. No amount of therapy will 'cure' a person who is transgendered. It's impossible to change the brain's way of thinking and feeling. Imagine how hard it would feel to be a male, but to have your brain telling you that you are, in fact, a female. It would be incredibly confusing. Transgendered people are almost always unhappy until they are able to 'become' their chosen gender. The child in question here is nine years old, so he is still many years away from any surgery, should he choose to have it. The next few years will be spent with therapists, to make sure he really is a 'female'. When he is of age, the transition can begin, should he choose to take that path.
