I think of all the various ideologies and isms found on these types of sites, the one I have the most problem with is that of [pick a religion] fundamentalists and [pick an ethnicity] nationalists. I don't really see a massive difference between any of these... It's only the details that change.
On nation under [fill in the blank] and all that...

Through some google search, I wound up in the website that I must declare enemy territory: Stormfront... home of the people I refer to mockingly as "stormtroopers".
I can't say there was anything that changed my mind about these "white nationalist" loons... but I can say that there are things I observed about them that I never really noticed before (to be fair, I also never really thought about it).

1. They do not belong to either side of the political spectrum: Most white supremacists I've seen here seem to identify with conservatives (much to the embarassment of sane conservatives)... but on the site I found it interesting that most seemed to see themselves as either in between or at both extremes- somehow "transcending" the ideological spectrum.
It was quite common to see people I would call "borderliners" who began as reactionaries complaining about affirmative action and got sucked in... but a more surprising "borderliner" was some guy who was a naive young liberal college student who took the whole "question authority" thing to the extent of finding himself a sympathizer with segregationists...

2. There are a lot of different types... but they all seem to get along. I think that's what's scary. Most of us around here with similar ideas comparatively cannot even manage to be civil with one another... but the skinheads, neo-nazis, segregationists, neo-confederates, and various other racists- they get along... despite lacking agreement on such big issues as whether other races are "equal but need to be seperated" or "inferior and need to be removed." That kind of cohesion in such a dangerous group of fringe ideologies... that's kind of creepy.

3. The female "white nationalists" stand up for women's rights sometimes. That just makes the whole thing all the more surreal to me. It strikes me as just bizarre that a person can come up with the argument for equal rights along gender lines... but not understand the logic along racial lines.

4. Aside from the racist junk... they sound chillingly like us. They talk about pop culture and crap like that in light-hearte ways. They often have conversations that sound almost identical to the conversations you see here... except with words like "white" and "race" thrown in... in ways that to us would look arbitrary- or perhaps even just like flamebait.

The feeling was much like I imagine an anthropologist gets studying a very alien culture. I tried to get a greater sense of where these stormtroopers come from. But in the end, all I could come up with was that they were from all over the place. The recruitment networks employed by the ringleaders must be amazing... as I can not imagine such civility and cohesion even on a forum composed only of liberals (anyone who's seen the Daily KOS knows what I'm talking about).

I can't help but feel a little more creeped out than I originally felt. I always figured they were just a ridiculous fringe group we could safely ignore... but they are rather a large coalition of fringe groups with one unifying goal who put aside all for that one rather evil goal.

Watch pretty much any documentary on the KKK.

They'll show you all the "family picnics" where everyone is smiling, and having a good "christian" time. They'll show you fathers who lovingly bring up their children in ways that would make Ward Cleaver jealous. They'll even sit down, in front of the camera, and calmly "discuss" all the various reasons why they hate n*gg*rs and jews.

I don't give a rat's *ss about any of that. Hate brought onto someone for something they have no control over is ignorant, and in this country, should be punishable to every inch of the law.

Keep in mind that some of the most ardent racists (such as Woodrow Wilson) were progressive liberal democrats who loved socialism and nationalism (wow, national socialism, I wonder where we've heard that term before. Also know that Hitler did not consider himself to be right wing or left wing, but "transcending" the spectrum and uniting all Germans of every class.
